I keep getting friend invites. My choice to accept or ignore is completely random because I don't see the value of adding other players as friends. Does this mean that they will lend me money? Maybe they will bail me out of jail after my next bachelor-party-gone-horribly-wrong.
Am I missing something?

Friends see your shouts ... you can say to lots of people at once if you friend them. That seems like a nice advantage. 🙂
I generally use my friends list to get votes on articles I feel need to be noticed nationally. Other then that, I don't see much of a use.
