Week in Politics 29 March 2009

Daoine na hÉireann,

Apologies for not writing last weekend, the congressional elections took up all of my time. However the two week period gives me a reasonably large amount to write about.

Congressional Election

Last week heralded a new congress.

Here is a list of the 17 Irish Union Party Representatives elected to represent you in Dáil Éireann:

Irish Union Party:

Cork and Kerry

Harpey-Demon
Uaithne
Gorzong
cora mcstrap

Dublin

Igor Thunderbrow
Severin
Nithraldur

Northeast

bakagaijin
James Campbell

Northwest

Eamon_de Valera
Vyse
D Tinglov

The Shannon

Inquitus
Clip

The Southeast

pdiddy
Paddy O'Fucyou

The Irish Union Party received an unprecedented 90 votes and now holds over 43% of seats in Dáil Éireann. Thanks to everyone who voted for the Irish Union Party.

Here is how the votes went and how they compared with last year:

FEB MARCH DIFFERENCE
IUP 46 90 96% increase
ISRP 34 54 59% increase
IF 14 22 57% increase
FF 6 10 67% increase
IFP 47 13 72% decrease

Total Vote 147 189 29% increase

In terms of seats won:

FEB MARCH DIFFERENCE
IUP 9 17 89% increase
ISRP 8 12 50% increase
IF 5 6 20% increase
FF 1 1 no change
IFP 17 4 76% decrease

Analysis

IUP

Should be very happy, virtually doubled both votes and seats despite losing two high profile congressmen and losing the presidential election last term. Best congressional election for our party in my memory. Well done to everyone who got elected and thanks to everyone who showed their support for the Irish Union Party.

ISRP

Will be pleased to see the large increase in their voter base but will be disappointed not to match IUP growth considering that they are currently running the country

IF

Should be satisfied. Not quite the renewal in IF support that the party would have hoped for but at least there were signs of gradual recovery for the party.

FF

Will de very disappointed not to gain any seats but will take positives from their high increase in voters. Percentage wise their voter increase was bettered only by the IUP

IFP

Well considering the banning of at least 12 of their members and the inactivity of their leader this was only to be expected. Note also that one IFP congressman left as soon as he received his congressional money.

Congressional Votes

New Citizen Fee (D Tinglov)

Raise the citizen fee to 15 IEP.

Defeated 30 - 6

I voted against as with state companies providing decent jobs for all new citizens and the low price of food a raise in a citizen fee in unecessary.

Minimum Wage (cleansteve)

Raise the minimum wage to 3 IEP

Defeated 23 - 13

Voted against as it is unecessary due to state industry propping up the wage market.

On Forum Congress Activity

1) Regional Assembly Bill

Passed 8 votes to 5

I opposed this bill. After Theus' election promises of regional councils I was very hopeful of an innovative scheme to bring new players into the political fold. All this does is further bloat the government without giving the council any actual purpose, creates yet more paperwork and promises to set up forum sections for each region (not yet actually implemented).

The setting up of forum sections hardly needed a wordy bill and creating positions without giving them a role seems pointless to me.

2) Bill: Referendum Policy and Referendum Organisation

(Currently at a vote) Passing 2 - 0

Although only two people have voted thus far this will likely pass as it was proposed by the government, endorsed by all parties in the discussion without anyone raising any major issues with it.

I voted in favour.

This resolution shows that raising a stink of the government's actions concerning our accession into the ESA did work and that the petition had some effect. I applaud the government for finally getting its act together and realising that the people deserve a voice.

3) Constitution
(Currently at a vote) Passing 6 - 1)

This is the revised constitution and I proposed it to be ratified and followed by Dáil Éireann whether or not the admins approve it. It has gotten widespread support ( so much so that I am actually 90% certain of the individual who voted against it). Hopefully this constitution will help our government operate better for the people in the future.

My Voting Record so far:
(Week 1)
Raise Minimum Wage NO
Remove taxation on Diamonds NO
Impeachment of Nithraldur NO

(Week 2)
State Run Weapons Company YES
New Citizen Fee NO
MPP with UK YES

(Week 3)
Raise minimum wage NO
Raise Citizen Fee NO
Ratify Constitution YES
Referendum Framework YES

What else your Irish Union Party Representatives are doing for you:

Now that the Irish State Housing company is back up and running after a long period of stagnation IUP congressman Vyse has come up with an interesting proposal concerning new players renting houses from the state. Housing for all eIreland's citizens has long been a cornerstone of IUP policy and an issue that we will continue to tackle into the future.

Well know IUP Dublin congressman Severin also made an interesting proposal. He has suggested the lowering of the Citizen Fee to 5 IEP as many feel that it is unecessary for new citizens to receive 10 IEP when they have a guaranteed job awaiting them in a state company. Vyse was again active in this discussion suggesting that 5 IEP be given to all new citizens upon signing up for the forums thus meaning that for active citizens the citizen fee is not reduced but saving the wastage of money on players who only play for a day or two.

As always the Irish Union Party is working for you in Dáil Éireann. If you have any questions feel free to send me or any IUP TD a message.
