Understanding the eRepublik Economy: A Beginner's Guide

Day 1,617, 19:58 Published in Switzerland Slovenia by JHUNTER

Hello all! This is JHUNTER, the current eSwiss Minister of Education. Please subscribe for more educational articles, especially you younger players! Feel free to message me with any questions you have. This week’s article will be a basic lesson on the economy for new players.

Market tab
When you scroll over the market tab in the main blue toolbar you should see this:

Clicking “Marketplace” should bring you to this:

The most important icons on here for most players are food and weapons. When you click on one of those two a second bar will drop down and you can select the quality of the food or weapons to buy. Obviously, you want to buy from whichever offer is cheapest once you decide which quality (quality are levels 1-6). Below is a data table for the different quality levels of food and weapons.

As you can see, for food it simply goes up by two. This means that to determine the best deal on food, say between q1 (quality 1) and q2 (quality 2) you can just look at the price. If q1 is .49 currency per unit and q2 is 1.00 currency per unit, then q1 is a better deal because .49*2=.98 and 1.00 is higher than .98. Therefore, in that situation you should buy q1 and save a little money!
Which quality of weapon is the best deal depends on your strength and how much you are willing to spend for higher damage. However in the table above you can see that the change in total damage is more dramatic than in food, so buying higher quality weapons is usually good, but it all depends on the money you have and how important damage and rank points are to you. (See my military article for more on rank points and other military topics.)

The third icon is Moving Tickets. You basically shouldn’t ever buy these. They allow you to move regions without being taxed but usually cost more than the tax would be.

In the marketplace you can also buy food raw materials and weapons raw materials (4th and 5th icons from the left) that you use to produce your own food and weapons.

Next are hospitals and defense systems. You shouldn’t worry about buying either. Hospitals are very rarely bought and not by one individual and I have never seen a defense system used before.

On the far right are companies. Most of the time you won’t need to buy a company from someone but you can look for a deal. For example, buying a q1 food company from costs 10 gold. If you are going to buy a new company, just check here first and see if there is one posted at less than 10. Sometimes someone will post one for 9.9 gold or something like that. Take advantage and save some gold.

Job Market

Pressing the “Job Market” button brings you to a list of different jobs available. Pick the highest one and press “Apply.”

Monetary Market

The Monetary Market is a place where you can exchange your country currency (for the Swiss it is CHF) for gold and gold for CHF. You virtually always get 1000 CHF per gold, but you have to pay about 1800 CHF to get 1 gold. So basically, it is better to hold on to your CHF and not trade it in for gold because that costs more than the gold is worth.
Note: The reason you see everything in CHF is because you are Swiss. If you were American, it would show up as everything being in USD.

Upgrading Companies

If you have a q1 company, it costs 20 gold to upgrade. Now if you really wanted to, you could pay the 20 gold. Please don’t. That’s painful to watch. Every few months the admins have a sale on upgrades. Sometimes you can upgrade to q2 for much much less than 20 gold. They have even had 50% off upgrade sales before. Wait until a sale and save a huge amount of money. Please.
