the word you found so offensive, citing it as a homophobic slur, is "punk"?
how about, instead of obsolete, historical and rare, we go with a more modern and common use of the word punk.

A punk is a person buzzing around like a gnat, being irritating just to irritate, behaving like a schoolyard smartass instead of an adult.
A punk is someone you'd like to swat like the buzzing gnat they are but they got a rule and you can't just go around slapping every punk who irritates ya.
A punk picks fights so they can cry about being picked on.

I have never, in 40 years, heard the word punk used within the community as you suggest.
