Thoughts about political careers. // Pensamientos sobre la trayectoria política.

eRepublik always represented a social experiment to me. It’s been months now since last time I could say I watched any change in any direction, but I think I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot already.

In particular I got interested in the evolution of human nature from innocence and ignorance to full-time politician. Yep… agree or not, to me a full-time politician is the opposite of someone that hasn’t known the temptation of evil or wrong.

Personally I started with one idea. I wanted to see how far honesty and truth could take you. Since I got president I guess you can actually get somewhere. I made mistakes, of course, but my conscience is absolutely clear. I did what I could and counted on a great team with me. And, most important in my opinion, I kept close contact with the people.

When the crowd isn’t too big it’s possible to be listened to despite different opinions and you can actually explain what you do without fearing a political suicide. I had a great (cruel) opposition while in office, but that only made me work harder.

When a country’s people start to grow beyond reach… that’s when trouble arrives. You have to worry about silent “voices” growing without you knowing. You have to watch out for backstabbing and treason. The higher up you get, the more you should be careful. That’s when politics really starts. When you have to say what people wants to hear instead of truth, when you have to focus on hope to get sympathy and on fear to get loyalty...

I’m relieved to say I didn’t have to make those choices, but I’ve seen it over and over again. And I guess if I decided to run again I couldn’t win, since that’s something I’m not able to do (you need talent for that).

Most politicians (there’s always some in it for the money and/or fame, but let’s forget about them) start up as idealists. Innocent and tremendously naïve. That is not meant as an insult. That’s great. And we need it. But most of them, if they get somewhere, meets the point where their path divides... where they have to make a choice. Either they get broken down by their own decisions along the way, they realize that they can never live up to their ideals and give up… or they give in. They start to care less and less about the right thing to do and convince themselves they do an acceptable wrong for a greater good.

Personally, I think the best politicians are those who never get to that point, those who have the ability to postpone it every time. Strong people who are able to make an exception when the occasion requires it, but never loose what’s right out of their sight. Yeah… exceptions. Like it or not they exist and are inevitable. Makes me think, if in eRepublik we encounter difficult decisions… choices that are never right, only bad or worse… what does it take in RL?

With this I would like to address presidents and tell them to stand up for their decisions. You have the loneliest spot in politics. There is no one backing you up or taking the blame for your steps. So be responsible. If you make a mistake, say so. And I strongly recommend avoiding electoral pacts. Do choose a team you trust to work with because what they do, you will have to answer for.

Congress is there to control government. Not to do its job. Do not confuse those terms. They make the rules, but that’s it. Or so it should be.

Opposition is what its name tells us. A force required for the government to meet our expectations. Giving them no time to relax, making them answer for every move they make. Be as hard as it takes, but make sure the goal is clear. You should not forget that although you sit on different sides of the table, you are all on the same ship wanting it to keep moving in the right direction. A captain alone can’t make that happen.

Citizens… Citizens are the true power of a nation. Those who decide who stesps up as the new head of state, those who decide what citizens are worthy a congress seat. All of us. We should remember that our voice is the one to be listened to, that our will is the one to be represented. And we should demand that.


Once again I’ve written way too much… anyway, I just wanted to share one of my points of view regarding politics ingame and encourage us all to play our part for our country to move steadily towards a better future. And also remind us that we shouldn’t judge so easily the decisions made, since there is not always a better alternative.

eRepublik siempre ha representado una especie de experimento social para mí. Han pasado meses desde la última vez que observé algún cambio de rumbo relevante, pero creo que he tenido ocasión de ver muchas cosas ya.

En concreto me ha resultado interesante la evolución de la naturaleza humana desde la inocencia e ignorancia al "político a tiempo completo". Sí... podéis estar de acuerdo o no, pero para mi un "político a tiempo completo" es algo opuesto a alguien que no haya conocido la tentación de la corrupción.

Personalmente empecé en base a una idea. Quería ver hasta donde se podía llegar con honestidad y verdad por bandera. Puesto que llegué a presidente supongo que realmente se pueden alcanzar metas lejanas. Cometí errores, por supuesto, pero tengo la conciencia absolutamente tranquila. Hice lo que pude y conté con un grandísimo equipo. Además, y en mi opinión lo más importante, mantuve un contacto cercano y continuo con la gente.

Cuando la cantidad de ciudadanos no es excesivamente grande es posible ser escuchado a pesar de las diferencias de opinión y realmente puedes explicar lo que haces sin arriesgarte a un suicidio político. Tuve una gran (cruel) oposición mientras ejercí en la presidencia, pero eso sólo me hizo trabajar más duro.

Cuando la población de un país empieza a crecer desmesuradamente... entonces es cuando vienen los problemas. Tienes que preocuparte por voces "silenciosas" que aparecen sin que te des cuenta. Tienes que vigilar y evitar puñaladas por la espalda y traiciones. Cuanto más alto subes, más cuidado debes tener. Ahí es cuando empieza la verdadera política. Cuando debes decir lo que la gente quiere oir antes que la verdad, cuando haces uso de la esperanza para obtener simpatia y te sirves del miedo para conseguir lealtad.

Puedo decir, aliviada, que no tuve que hacer frente a este tipo de situaciones aunque las haya visto una y otra vez. Supongo que si decidiera volver a presentarme a la presidencia no podría ganar puesto que es algo que no sé hacer (creo que hace falta talento para ello).

La mayoría de los políticos (siempre los hay motivados por las riquezas y/o fama, pero olvidémonos de ellos) empiezan como idealistas. Tremendamente inocentes. No digo esto como algo negativo ni por ofender a nadie . Es genial y lo necesitamos. Pero la mayoría, si llegan a alguna parte, se encuentran con un momento en el que su trayectoria se trunca y deben tomar una decisión sobre qué dirección tomar. O bien se derrumban ante sus propias decisiones por el camino, se dan cuenta de que nunca podrán estar a la altura de sus ideales y lo dejan... o bien se rinden a las circunstancias, empezando a importarles cada vez menos lo correcto y se auto convencen de que hacen un mal aceptable por un bien mayor.

A título personal creo que los mejores políticos son aquellos capaces de evitar este punto, aquellos con la habilidad de posponer dicho momento. Personas fuertes capaces de marcar la diferencia, de hacer una excepción cuando las circunstancias lo requieren pero nunca pierden de vista lo que está bien. Sí... excepciones. Nos guste más o menos existen y son inevitables. Lo cierto es que todo esto me hace pensar, si en eRepublik es difícil tomar ciertas decisiones ... elecciones que nunca son buenas, solo malas o peores... ¿qué hará falta para esto en la vida real?

Con esto me gustaría dirigirme a los presidentes para que se hagan responsables de sus decisiones. Tenéis el puesto más solitario existente en política. No hay nadie respaldándoos ni asumiendo la culpa por vuestros errores. Así que sed responsables. Si cometéis un error, admitidlo. Y recomiendo firmemente que evitéis pactos electorales. Elegid un equipo en el que confiéis porque lo que hagan ellos, vosotros responderéis por ello.

El congreso está ahi para controlar al gobierno. No para hacer su trabajo. No deberíamos confundir estos términos. Crean las reglas, pero ya está. O al menos debería ser así.

La oposición es lo que su nombre indica. Una fuerza requerida para que el gobierno cumpla su cometido. Sin darles tregua, haciendo que respondan por cada movimiento que hagan... Siendo lo duros que haga falta, pero siempre con una meta clara. No deberíais olvidar que aunque estéis sentados en diferentes lados de la mesa, estáis todos en el mismo barco con la objetivo de navegar hacia una misma dirección. Con sólo el capitán manejando la nave es imposible que esto ocurra.

La ciudadanía... la ciudadanía es el verdadero poder de la nación. Los que deciden quien es el que asume el puesto de cabeza de estado, los que deciden qué ciudadanos merecen los escaños de congresistas. Todos nosotros. Deberíamos recordar que es nuestra voz la que se debe escuchar, que es nuestra voluntad la que se debe representar. Y deberíamos exigirlo.


De nuevo me he pasado tres pueblos escribiendo... bueno, solo quería compartir uno de mis puntos de vista sobre la política en el juego y animarnos a todos a jugar nuestro papel para que nuestro país tenga un rumbo estable hacia un futuro mejor. Y para que procuremos no juzgar a la ligera las decisiones tomadas, que no siempre hay una alternativa mejor.
