The Turn

Day 625, 09:20 Published in Canada Canada by Rigour6

As we go to press, united forces are inexorably pushing PEACE invaders back to no-man's land in the battle of Ontario. It is by all accounts the most glorious battle in the history of the eworld, one in which the entire existence of a nation was at stake.

In the past, invaders typically left their conquered enemies with one region. There are a number of reasons for this. Although the costs of a loss of a high-value territory are high, the loss of the last territory of a nation are catastrophic. Such that for many players, it is a bridge too far. Fortunes in this world naturally swing back and forth and there are certain blows one does not attempt to land because one does not wish to receive them from the other side either. Conquest is one thing; genocide is another.

One of the effects of nation destruction is typically a substantial group from the eliminated nation leave the game completely, and we're all poorer for that.

When the victory in the first (and hopefully last) Battle of Ontario finally comes, no doubt the Canadians and their allies will take great pride in it, although they should take little comfort, as the war continues to favour PEACE. It is a great victory for the underdog Canucks, and chapeau to them, and champagne for them and their allies. There is one story, however, which will likely remain less reported.

Whatever their leadership's plans, and whatever their pride in their victories until now (well-founded or not) at this, the final juncture, there were a substantial number of everyday Frenchmen, Hungarians, and what have you from the PEACE alliance who sat this one out. Simply put, they were not prepared to be part of the total destruction of Canada, either because they respect the game too much to hurt it in that way, respect their opponents too much to humiliate them utterly, wouldn't wish the same to happen to them, or simply because it didn't fit with their personal sense of fair play. They certainly aren't prepared to switch sides in this World War, but neither are they going to take an active role in the destruction of nation toward which they fundamentally bear little animosity.

In the fun of role playing and propaganda wars, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that without people on the other side, there is no game. The leadership of PEACE may have forgotten that, but a substantial number of the everyday players in their alliance haven't. They fought somewhere else today, but they wouldn't soil their hands with being part of the destruction of eCanada. And it is those players, not their leadership, who are preserving the future of this game for everyone.
