In every eCountry I've been in, and every country media I've read during elections, there have been people who have no concrete goals, no actual manifesto or anything to strive for, except for the office itself. They speak about power, how they want to get there and how they dethrone the current corrupted regime. It's a constant annoyance to have such people as they very rarely contribute anything to the community, and if they get elected, they do little to nothing. In worst case scenario they do stupid things, like trigger every MPP they can and ruin the country other people have built for months. I wanted to examine this phenomenon from one, sort of a philosophical point of view. The quest for power has both psychological roots and philosophical implications. I'd love to write about them both in eRepublik terms, but this time I'll concentrate only on the latter.

What is power?

In political terms, power means ability to rule over ministries and country, rule over its people. More over, it means power and ability to rule over yourself. If you gain the highest seat in government, namely the presidency, there's no one else giving you orders. When you look it like this, the quest for power is actually a form of self-preservation. Political power allows you to rule over yourself and others, thus giving you higher chances of remaining ”alive and kicking”. In nature, the will to stay alive can be seen to have a form of wanting ”power”, as the ability and power to rule over your environment in terms of obtaining food and shelter are the means of staying alive.


Quest for power in game mechanical terms

If we assume that the quest for power is about trying to obtain the freedom and right to rule over yourself, the implications of it are interesting. There is nothing wrong in itself if you want to have the freedom of will, but the quest for a political office means that besides yourself, you have the power to rule over others too. Therefore it is paradoxal for anyone to let someone else in power, as, if everyone thought of it this way, every citizen in eRepublik would be seeking presidency and political office, not letting anyone else rule over them. As this clearly isn't the case, we can assume that the leader figure who people let rule over themselves somehow allows the people the freedom of them ruling over themselves, and not suppress them (in ideal case at least).

I mentioned psychological point of view above. The quest for power, not letting anyone rule over oneself is also a form of inferiority complex and the urge to gain freedom over guardianship. It happens to every person usually in teenage before they grow up and reach adulthood, the time for this phase varies, but every person goes through this phase. In eRepublik, this same urge manifests itself as reluctance and detestation to submit under anyone's orders, whether this behaviour is individual or collective, is case-specific. This behaviour is somewhat distinct to the eUK as a country, but that's a matter that'd require a separate article so I won't go any further in analyzing it.


Me me me! It's mine, you can't rule over me!

The individualistic part manifests itself in every person playing the game in a way or another. What's relevant about them, is how they go about it. People seeking political office are not always simply thinking about themselves only, but others around them too. This could be argued further too, as the question of ”is the good of the community also the good of the individual” is ambiguous. Some things however implicate if the candidate seeks only his own benefit, or does s/he try to help the community too. The manifesto, and concrete goals are usually a good meter of this. If the candidate simply states that he wants presidency, that he wants power over the current, rotten regime, there usually is no reason to believe this candidate seeks power to help others, but the campaign is most likely only for himself, or for a small group of people around him/her. Concrete goals to help the country and the community, and shown deeds to help others around oneself indicate, that the candidate who seeks political office, believes at least unconsciously that helping the community is the best way to help oneself, and that teamwork is better for all, even for oneself.

The point I'm trying to make, is that power as an absolute value/virtue does not exist. Power to do something is what the question is about, and to what that power is used.


Why presidency? Other offices give power too!

This is a point that many people should assimilate. Power, or political office means nothing if you have no goals or objective to reach. Simply getting into office is a bad goal, I would argue it is not a goal at all. Simply trying to get presidency, or any office just because, is in my opinion petty and childish because of its psychological implications. Getting into office because you have ideas on how to improve your environment to suit others around you, and to help the community so that you have higher chances of prospering, is by most standards considered a better goal. In game terms, helping the community allows for maximum number of players to have fun, it allows them to play the game. Playing just for yourself without caring for others around you ruins the game for many, especially if you happen to be in political office, or in position to affect other people's (e)lives. If you are bored, think the game has nothing to offer, is the best way to go about it, ruin other players game too, or simply leave quietly and let others have their fun? The choice you pick does not tell as much about the game itself or other players, it tells something about your character.


Is this what you wish to achieve?

Ask from yourself: what do you want to achieve in office? Do your goals require getting into office, or can you achieve your goal without it? I can personally tell you, that presidency is overrated. If you want to improve economy, military, domestic affairs or legislation, ministries and congress are better places for that. All objectives except for one can be achieved without president's seat: Writing legislation is a task of the congress, improving military functionality and effectiveness belongs to Ministry of Defence, economy for Ministry of Trade / Economy / Finance, and so on. In game mechanical terms, the one and only thing presidency gives you power over, is pushing the button. If power is the only thing you are seeking, and presidency is the thing you are aiming for, then it inevitably means, that the only thing you must be aiming for, is getting to push that button. If you don't consider that as your objective, then presidency should not be your goal.

Notice that I emphasized the part ”if power is the only thing you are seeking”. Helping the community, and showing the ways to achieve this in presidential manifesto, and having deeds to back you up, most likely gives you other motives besides getting to push the button. Otherwise, if this is not the case, be wary of who you vote for. Elections are nearing.

Jokaisessa eMaassa jossa olen ollut, ja jokaisen maan mediassa on ollut vaalien aikaan esillä ehdokkaita, joilla ei ole konkreettisia tavoitteita, oikeita manifestejä tai mitään, mihin pyrkiä, muuta kuin virka itse. He puhuvat vallasta, kuinka he haluavat valtaan ja kuinka he syrjäyttävät nykyisen korruptoituneen hallinnon. Tällaiset ihmiset ovat jatkuva rasite yhteisölle, sillä he hyvin harvoin tekevät mitään auttaakseen muita, ja jos he sattuvat pääsemään virkaan johon ovat ehdolla, he tekevät tuskin mitään. Pahimmassa tapauksessa he tekevät typeriä asioita, kuten esimerkiksi laukaisevat jokaisen MPP:n jonka voivat hyökkäämällä päättömästi minne voivat, ja tuhoavat maan, jota muut ihmiset ovat rakentaneet kuukausia. Halusin tarkastella tätä ilmiötä filosofisesta näkökulmasta. Vallanhimolla on sekä psykologiset juuret että filosofiset syyt ja seurauksensa, haluaisin kirjoittaa molemmista, mutta tällä kertaa keskityn vain jälkimmäiseen.

Mitä valta on?

Poliittisessa merkityksessä valta tarkoittaa kykyä hallita ministeriöitä ja maata sekä sen ihmisiä. Sen lisäksi, se ennenkaikkea tarkoittaa itsemääräämiskykyä. Jos saavutat hallituksen korkeimman viran, presidenttiyden, kukaan muu ei ole antamassa sinulle käskyjä. Kun asiaa ajattelee näin, vallanhalu on itse asiassa eräs itsesuojeluvaiston muoto. Poliittinen valta sallii ihmisen hallita itseään ja muita, antaen paremmat mahdollisuudet selviytyä elämässä. Luonnossa elämänhalu voidaan nähdä haluna saada valtaa, sillä kyky ja valta hallita ympäristöään on selviytymisen edellytys.


Vallanhalu pelimekaanisin termein

Jos oletamme, että vallanhalu tarkoittaa halua saavuttaa itsemääräämisoikeus ja vapaus, sen seuraukset ovat mielenkiintoisia. Siinä ei ole mitään väärää, jos haluaa vapaan tahdon, mutta poliittiseen virkaan pääseminen tarkoittaa, että itsensä lisäksi ihmisellä on myös kyky hallita muita. Jos kaikki ajattelisivat näin, olisi ristiriitaista päästää ketään poliittiseen valtaan, ja kaikki eRepublikin kansalaiset pyrkisivät presidentiksi, tai johonkin poliittiseen virkaan, jotta kukaan muu ei voisi alistaa heitä. Koska näin ei ilmiselvästi ole, voimme olettaa, että johtajahahmo, jonka ihmiset sallivat johtaa itseään, sallii ihmisille itsemääräämisoikeuden, eikä alista heitä (ainakin ideaalisessa tapauksessa).

Mainitsin psykologisen näkökulman yllä. Halu valtaan, antamatta kenenkään antaa käskyjä itselleen, on eräs alemmuuskompleksin esiintymismuoto, ja halu päästä vapaaksi holhouksesta. Tämä itsenäistymisen vaihe tapahtuu jokaiselle ihmiselle, sen kesto vaihtelee yksilöittäin, mutta kaikki käyvät läpi tämän vaiheen jossain vaiheessa. Erepublikissa tämä sama halu esiintyy haluttomuutena ja inhona alistua kenenkään käskyvallan alle, ja se, onko tämä käytös yksilöllistä vai kollektiivista, riippuu tapauksesta. Tämä käytös on kuuluisasti ominaista eIsolle-Britannialle maana, mutta se on jo oma artikkelin aiheensa, joten en käsittele sitä sen enempää.



Minä minä minä! Se on minun, sinä et voi antaa käskyjä minulle!

Ilmiön yksilöllinen puoli esiintyy jokaisen ihmisen pelikäytöksessä tavalla tai toisella. Mikä on tässä oleellista, on miten ihmiset itse antavat sen tulla esiin, ja miten he itse siihen suhtautuvat. Ihmiset, jotka hakevat poliittista valtaa, eivät aina ajattele vain itseään, vaan myös muita ympärillään. Tätäkin aihetta voisi käsitellä syvällisemmin, sillä kysymys siitä, ”onko yhteisön etu myös yksilön etu”, riippuu tapauksesta ja lähtökohdista. Jotkin asiat kuitenkin toimivat hyvinä viitteinä sille, ajaako ehdokas vain omaa, vai myös yhteisön etua. Vaalipuhe ja konkreettiset tavoitteet toimivat yleensä hyvinä merkkeinä. Jos ehdokas julistaa vain haluavansa valtaan, että hän haluaa syrjäyttää nykyisen mädäntyneen hallinnon, ei yleensä kannata ajatella, että tämä ehdokas haluaa auttaa yhteisöä, vaan hän mitä luultavammin ajaa vain omansa, tai pienen lähipiirinsä etua ja hupia maasta välittämättä. Konkreettiset tavoitteet maan ja yhteisön edistämiseksi, sekä jo tehty työ yhteisön auttamiseksi viittaavat taas siihen, että ehdokas uskoo ainakin alitajuisesti yhteisön auttamiseen, siihen että muiden auttaminen on tässä yhteydessä paras tapa auttaa myös itseään, ja että yhteistyö on kaikkien etu. - Pointti, jonka yritän tehdä, on että valtaa sinällään ei ole olemassa. Valta tehdä jotain, ja se, mihin sitä käytetään, on se, mistä on kyse.


Miksi presidentiksi? Muutkin virat antavat valtaa!

Tämä on pointti, jonka monen ihmisen pitäisi sisäistää. Valta, tai poliittinen virka ei tarkoita yhtään mitään, jos sen haltijalla ei ole tavoitteita joihin pyrkiä. Vain virkaan pääseminen on hyvin huono tavoite, ja väittäisin, ettei se ole tavoite ollenkaan. Pelkkä presidentiksi haluaminen, tai mihin tahansa virkaan hapuaminen vain sen itsensä takia on minun mielestäni lapsellista ja pikkumaista sen psykologisten motiivien takia. Virkaan haluaminen ideoiden ja tavoitteiden takia, yhteisön auttamisen halun takia jotta kaikilla olisi paremmat edellytykset pelata peliä ja selviytyä, on lähes kaikilla mittapuilla parempi motiivi. Pelin kannalta yhteisön auttaminen antaa mahdollisimman monelle pelaajalle mahdollisuuden pelata peliä heidän itse haluamallaan tavalla, ja itsekkäät pyrkimykset sen sijaan pilaavat muiden peli-iloa. Varsinkin poliittisessa virassa, vain itsensä vuoksi pelaaminen muista välittämättä voi pilata koko pelin monilta muilta. Siksi esitänkin kysymyksen, että jos sinulla on tylsää, ajattelet ettei pelillä ole sinulle enää mitään tarjottavaa, mikä on sinun mielestäsi paras tapa toimia? Aiotko pilata pelin myös mahdollisimman monelta muulta vain koska sinulla on tylsää etkä näe pelaamisessa mieltä, vai annatko muiden pitää peli-ilonsa, ja poistut pelistä rauhanomaisesti? Se, kumman vaihtoehdon valitset, ei kerro paljoa pelistä tai muista pelaajista, vaan sinusta itsestäsi.



Tämänkö haluat saavuttaa?

Kysy itseltäsi: Mitä haluat saavuttaa virassa? Vaativatko tavoitteesi virkaan pääsyä, vai voitko saavuttaa ne ilmankin? Voin henkilökohtaisesti kertoa, että presidenttiys on yliarvostettua. Jos haluat parantaa taloutta, armeijaa, sisämaan asioita tai lainsäädäntöä, ministeriys ja eduskunta ovat presidenttiyttä parempi vaihtoehto. Kaikki tavoitteet yhtä lukuunottamatta voi saavuttaa ilman presidenttiyttä. Lakien kirjoittaminen on eduskunnan tehtävä, armeijan toimintakyvyn parantaminen ja tehostaminen kuuluu puolustusministeriölle, taloudenhoito taas kauppa-, talous- ja valtiovarainministeriölle, jne. Pelimekaanisesti, presidenttiys antaa vain yhden sellaisen vallan, jota kenelläkään muulla ei ole, ja se on itse napin painaminen. Jos valta on ainut asia, mitä haluat, ja haet presidentiksi, se tarkoittaa väistämättä sitä, että ainut asia mihin pyrit on, että pääset painamaan sitä nappia. Jos et pidä sitä tavoitteenasi, silloin sinun ei pitäisi pyrkiä presidentiksi.

Huomatkaa, että painotin osaa ”jos valta on ainut asia, mitä haluat”. Yhteisön auttaminen, ja tapojen näyttäminen sen tekemiseksi vaalipuheessa, sekä tehdyt saavutukset sen eteen viittaavat vahvasti myös muihin tavoitteisiin itse napin painamisen lisäksi. Mutta, jos näin ei ole, katso ketä äänestät. Vaalit lähestyvät.
