The New Colossus

"The New Colossus"

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

-Emma Lazarus, as engraved on the Statue of Liberty

In these rough times in eAmerican destiny, it never hurts to remember the words of those past. Among numerous other immortal words, this poem can be a source of comfort to the immigrant, and a source of pride to the citizen.

As fits the name of the newspaper, real life American speeches and literary works will probably be published regularly. I'll try not to display anything too opinionated, as offending people is not what I am aiming for. These articles should just be a relaxing read after a hectic day for all Americans, no matter their beliefs. Usually a short summary or story in my own words will follow the real life passage. Until next time, vote, comment, and subscribe.
