The Maple Leaf and the Red Hand!

The Maple Leaf hoisted aloft over Stormont

Yesterday was election day across the New World. The people exercised their democratic rights, as given to them by the almighty admins, and voted for the people they wanted to see represent them. Firstly, I want to take a moment to thank all who voted for myself and my Party colleague, Logiconor, and indeed all people in eNI who turned out to cast their votes. Howwever, our democratic wishes were to be usurped by the flawed system that is eRepublik.

So what happened? That's a great question, and one I asked myself this morning, as I scratched my head in bewilderment. Last night, just before I climbed into my comfortable bed, The Unity Party had taken two seats in eNI, along with one for the UKRP. This was a situation that was unlikely to change, as most had cast their votes, and only a few floating voters remained to cast their votes. Whilst no one can say for certain what might have happened, we never got the chance to find out!

Concurrent with the latter stages of the election was a Canadian assault on eNI. Attacking a territory before a Congress election is a common tactic. Taken to it's extreme (which it has several times before in the New World), this tactic can deprive a people of any form of Congress if all their territory is occupied. Of course this makes sense, and reflects the real world; if you subjugate a people entirely, you restrict their democratic freedom and deprive them of certain rights. What doesn't make sense is what happened this morning!

Vote Counting...It's Important!

So to history...a while back, admins made some changes to the game (what's new there then) to prevent people abusing the election system via multi-accounts. This is a sensible precaution, and did something that was quite rare for an admin decision-actually made sense and made a positive difference to how we play this game. However, this morning revealed an unfair flaw in this system. When the election finished this morning; when all citizens of eUK had finally cast their votes, eNI was still in British hands. Once the 24 hour time slot for casting votes had finished, there then began a period of time when votes were checked and verified. When I logged on today during this period, there was about 45 minutes left of this process, and eNI was still part of eUK. In that 45 minute timeframe, the Canadians sucessfully completed their battle and won eNI from British hands. As a result, no Congressmen were returned for eNI, after all the people had gone to the effort of voting.

eUK...STILL Standing!

Of course on a national level, the eUK suffered very little. We still had our allotted amount of Congressmen. However, it seems to me that all the effort put into elections in eNI was for very little. Indeed, even on a national level, this issue could have a direct effect. Where it looked likely that one Party could have returned an extra two Congressmen from a region, those gains might be lost upon the region being conquered. Of course this all makes perfect sense where a battle has already occurred and finished. However, all the voting had been completed whilst eNI was still British. The hold up was the lengthy admin period of checking votes. Whilst this is only a small issue in this instance, the potential here for abuse on a larger scale is easy to see. With such a flaw the admins are saying that it doesn't matter how you vote, that it can be snatched away from you whilst they are going over the votes.

Welcome to the New World!

To this humble citizen, it makes no sense to me that elections can be concluded whilst a territory is still British, but that territory's Congressmen cannot be returned because during the checking phase, which is all about game mechanics, not game play, another nation conquers said territory! No doubt this issue will never be looked at, and we shall move on from this minor issue. However, I hope others do not have to see defeat snatched from the jaws of victory in such a callous and unfair way. If you do happen to be watching Admins, please consider looking at this matter...
