The Importance of IRC
Ian Arb
This article is inspired from reading Don Croata’s articles on the changes we need to implement to improve our diplomatic situation to have a chance of participating in any future powerhouse alliance.
The eUK has achieved a lot of diplomatic success recently and fair play to them. But how can we restore that diplomatic strength we once had during those golden EDEN times? If I remember correctly IRC was the key to that. There was plenty of activity on our beloved national IRC channel and this attracted many other players from different countries to learn more about our community. This is why it is crucial for the President, MoD and MoFA to be active on IRC as most of the diplomatic communication is done instantly through IRC.
The Sunday Strikes haven’t been exploding in activity recently and that might down to some players not finding the time, fair enough. However do not underestimate its effect it can have on co-ordination of military unit damage. We’ve lost a good fair amount of battles against our enemies taking advantage of IRC co-ordination in crucial battle times. If we just increase that activity on Sunday Strikes it may help increase our international profile and we will be using our damage effectively as possible.
There are some of you that despise using IRC due to trolls who abuse other players for their own satisfaction. It is important to remember that it also happens on the actual game site as well so it’s the same in IRC as in a different format. My only advice for those types of players is to not feed the trolls which has been stressed enough already.
Here are the pros and cons of the IRC.
Pros
• Helps citizens get to know each other better
• Increases our international profile
• Benefits Military Unit damage in crucial battles through effective co-ordination
• You can visit other countries’ channels and get informed of what’s happening
Cons
• Trolls will use it which is inevitable
• Players may not have the time to use IRC
• Time zones may have an effect on activity levels
• Some players are IRC illiterate
How and where can I find this IRC?
There are many IRC clients out there such as:
• mIRC
• ChatZilla (Firefox plugin)
• IceChat
• Mibbit (not highly recommended)
I use mIRC and it served me extremely well. If you don’t want to pay the license fee then you download the other clients such as ChatZilla and IceChat who are as good as mIRC. However I wouldn’t recommend Mibbit as it hasn’t been reliable for me.
The University released an article on how to use IRC. I recommend give it a read.
I hope some of you can spare a few hours on IRC and it is for the greater good of the society if we want to make a difference. My biggest advice I can give before you log on to IRC is to beware of the trolls.
See you there on #Eire!
Ian

good good
I spent an interesting bit of time in IRC during the wee hours with some assorted governmental types. It was definitely interesting to chat with them, and also a good opportunity to gain knowledge.
Is there a place to find a list of IRC channels used by eRepublik nations and major organizations? I know of #eire and #usa and #IrishArmy, but that's it.
http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/IRC Some of them might be outdated.
thanks, Ian, that gives me a starting point
Good job Ian!
hard vote on this, just trying to get IFP on IRC, gonna be hard one to do so 😃
You can't expect everyone to be on IRC but if you have at least core members willing to join then I'd call it success.
