Dear friends,

I’d like to start by thanking all the people who have welcomed me for my stay in Serbia. You have only reinforced my opinion that you’re a good bunch of guys and I would recommend everyone at least pay the country a short visit in their time in the game 🙂

Today I want to answer a question I have been asked a lot lately. Why is Phoenix winning? The question is a good one; until recently, EDEN had a massive upper hand, and was winning almost every battle. In Russia the defeat suffered by Phoenix was so bad that Russia itself was wiped from the map. Yet recently Brazil and France have successfully counterattacked; Poland is being held in Germany and Russia has reappeared back on the world map. So what has changed?

Well to understand what has changed you must first understand the nature of both alliances, and of the politics which surrounds them. It is undeniable that EDEN has a wealthier, more focused population. Many of you have been in battles where individuals have tanked many hundreds of thousands of points of damage - and this is repeated several times per day. EDEN has many old players, and these elite groups can quickly move and deploy. They are person-for-person stronger than Phoenix, and wealthier as well.

Phoenix however has its own advantages- it has to, otherwise it wouldn’t exist! Phoenix first of all has numbers on its side. It has always been the most populous alliance, and has the largest number of countries. These two advantages are connected but each presents their own tactical strengths. High population means that in direct MPP battles more citizens can participate. Citizens fighting five to ten times and relying on wages to provide the wellness (in food or housing) is a cheap rush attack that doesn’t require money for tanking. It means that there is a constant stream of Phoenix damage in every battle, and EDEN have to continually rely on gold and food packs to stop themselves being overwhelmed. Secondly, because Phoenix has more countries it has more manoeuvrability. Put simply, several countries can attack at once, in different parts of the world, to divide damage. Even putting aside the actual damage they cause, these countries provide tactical support in battles and conflicts.

So to put this into perspective, we can look at times in the past when the two blocks have had major successes. PEACE and Phoenix have always been strongest shortly after a disastrous occupation and then a subsequent baby boom. As our population explodes, they demand war, and countries are attacked. The population matures and the wave damage forces EDEN onto the retreat. Victories cause more babies to continue playing, and over time we do very well. Usually however, EDEN responds by using our weaknesses against us- RWs, attacks on stronghold regions, dividing our powers by attacking multiple important home regions. As we lose regions, people quit, or quit fighting. The ordinary people become less excited by the war and we slowly lose our gains. Eventually EDEN counter-attacks and often succeeds in defeating one or more of our countries. Then the circle begins again with revolts and uprisings, followed by a baby boom 😃

We can see from this cycle the many important strategic factors involved in the conflict, but there is one extra factor which is always forgotten- morale. With Phoenix’ reliance on numbers, our performance relies a lot on the morale and willingness to fight of our people. This is why despite the battles having the same MPPs, and only a short while apart, Phoenix lost North of Brazil but subsequently won many other battles. Phoenix is always strongest on the attack, and weaker on the defence. This is because unlike EDEN we rely on large numbers of players, rather than the committed elite with their *cough* credit cards.

So now we are on the offensive, what do I see in the near future for Phoenix? Well without giving anything away, the key for Phoenix is to keep attacking. EDEN is divided, and becoming more divided each day. Phoenix on the other hand has struggled under occupations, defeats and losses and come out of it still strong and united. We have shown that we are stronger where it matters- in the heart. And we should ourselves take hope in that, and in our new victories. Our people should fight harder, and win back the countries of our brothers who suffer without their lands.

There is no end to this war, but there is fun and glory to be had in fighting it. Let’s show EDEN what we’re made of.

Iain
