I have just read an interesting article. According to Football leaks, 16 elite European clubs signed an agreement and they want to start their own version of „UEFA Champions League“. A league similar to the NBA league, league of closed format! This competition, if this is true, would start in 2021.

I read about this few years ago. My first thought back then was great! More matches between stronger clubs! I wasn't thinking what would happen to national championships....

Today I'm an even bigger fan of this league. Why? If you see the current situation in European football you can see the gap between rich and poor clubs is getting bigger and bigger every year. I blame UEFA for this. They are making decisions that help rich clubs becoming rich every year and small clubs just don't have a chance to develop. As soon as a small club produce a talented player, the rich club takes that player....leaving the small club with a weaker team. Rich clubs are 3,4 levels in front of small clubs. That's why they need to play a part of other teams. It would be good for small clubs because then they would have more chance to develop in their own league without the „Elite“. This European Super League would end the Champions League as we know it today. Different clubs would be playing in quarter, semifinals and final. There would be 2 classes of clubs in Europe, Elite and „the rest of Europe“. Which isn't exactly bad. If you ask me ideal situation would be a Champions league with a similar format as UEFA Nations League, where each club is playing games with similarly strong clubs. What's the point of Champions league where matches end with results like 7:0, 6:1, 5:0........That's why I support this idea. Let the rich clubs play their own League....this would give chance other clubs to develop in other leagues. Economic differences would get even bigger....but at least we would watch more competitive football.

Now some words about this Super League.



Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Milan would be founding teams. They would play this league every year and they wouldn't get relegated. Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Marseille, Inter and Roma would be guest teams in the first season.

The format of the competition would have two phases – league & elimination. They also say that they will have a second division in which the best qualified would have options to be promoted.

Clubs would still stay in their national championships though. But they would play national championship with reserve teams, meaning that other teams would probably start winning national championships.

If this is all true, this would change the game at so many levels! UEFA would have to change their competitions. We have to wait and see what will happen…

In the meantime, what are your thoughts about this competition? Would you like to see more games with Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern, Real Madrid…..or more games like PSG – Crvena Zvezda, Liverpool – Maribor, Barcelona – Celtic ets.?
