So Clearly Destined to Persevere

I have never known an entity so clearly destined to persevere as Austria. Do not understand me wrongly - an end approaches, but to a chapter, not the story. For now, it is a time of woe. Honorable policies did not serve us as they should have. Other nations did not act with the integrity we would have liked. A former President of our nation fought fiercely against us, and for the capital. But we cannot pretend to be foolish, to be surprised. This was foreseeable. Rangeley and I have been talking for months about how Austria’s strategic position in central Europe made the nation a target. We cannot say that we didn't know evil exists in the world. And I warned you about Alfred. He was always sinister, from the moment he arrived until the moment he led the invasion against Styria.

It will be easy to allow emotion to overwhelm you in these upcoming days. Reject this possibility, though, as it will impair your ability to learn from this. For the wise, there’s something to be learned from all experiences, and this is no exception. I greatly desire to be with you, Austrians, to help you in these days. Unfortunately, I have dedicated myself to Switzerland and the Swiss cause, and I must follow through. Know, though, that I am with you in spirit, and one day, I hope, I will be in actuality too.
