Shortest Paths Between Energy Recovery Locations

TLDR;

So if you don't stand that well with Prestige Points, you need to boost your energy recovery rate. Here is how to do it the most efficiently.

The shortest unlocking paths depend of course from where you started your amazing journey, but perhaps there are some similarities as they are in the same network and shortest paths might be at least partially shared...

Africa - Europe

From Lagos to Cagliari [7h]:
Lagos [8h] - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria [1h] - Lisbon [2h] - Cagliari [4h]

Africa - North America

From Lagos to Culiacan [18h]:
Lagos [8h] - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria [1h] - Ponta Delgada [8h] - Cali [4h] - Oaxaca [1h] - Culiacan [4h]

My Amazing Maiden Voyage: Day 2

My primary goal of securing a permanent energy center at Maiduguri, Nigeria has been accomplished today, on Day 2 of my Amazing Maiden Voyage.

Today, on Day 2 of Amazing Journey I have managed to unlock 9 new locations.

Locations Unlocked on Day 2:
8. Lagos (NG),
9. Iquitos (PE),
10. Kano (NG),
11. Maiduguri (NG),
12. Cali (PE),
13. Oaxaca (MX ),
14. Culiacan (MX ),
15. Tallahassee (USA),
16. Saint Paul (USA)

And 4 of them (in bold) are Energy Recovery Centers.
That makes 16 locations unlocked all together in the first 2 days.

So in total in the first 2 days of the Amazing Journey I managed to collect
5 out of 10 Energy Recovery Centers:
Cagliary (IT),
Lagos (NG),
Maiduguri (NG),
Culiacan (MX ) and
Saint Paul (USA).

The next goals are the Energy Recovery Centers in Asia, the first one being Shanghai.

Currently unlocking Polokwane (ZA), then comes Jizan (SA)...

Distance Traveled : 160,292 km
Amazing Coins: 400
Gold : 702
Currency: 216,893 HRK
Prestige Points: 19,367

Currently at the end of the Day 2 of the journey, I am at 3220 Energy Capacity with 1450 Energy/h Recovery rate (145 Energy/6 min).

After securing 2 out of 10 Energy Recovery Locations:
Cagliari and Lagos, the next objective is to secure Maiduguri, the Energy Recovery Location #3, but also a permanent Energy Center.

Then what remains are:
4 Energy Recovery Locations in Asia (Shanghai, Kaohsiung, Xining and Mumbai),
2 Energy Recovery Locations in North America (Culiacan, Saint Paul) and
1 Energy Recovery Location in Europe (Umea).

The shortest unlocking paths depend of course from where you started your amazing journey, but perhaps there are some similarities as they are in the same network and shortest paths might be at least partially shared...

Maximizing Energy Recovery Rate

So the question is in which order to unlock them in order to maximize Energy points recovered by the end of this Weekly Challenge?

Greedy Approach

A greedy approach would always prefer the closest unlockable energy recovery location.

Each collected energy recovery location brings in 16 Energy points every 6 min, or 160 Energy points per hour. So each hour lost on unlocking anything else that is not leading to an energy center in a shortest amount of time is 160 Energy points lost. Every hour. Or equivalent to 3840 Energy per day if you lose a whole day. Per energy recovery location.

Use Case - Ideal Starting Location vs. Porto Alegre

So for instance, instead of landing in Kaohsiung and unlocking my first energy recovery location within an hour, and the next one in Shanghai within the first 5 hours, I wasted time by unlocking first:

Porto Alegre (1h),
Cape Town (1h),
Salvador (4h),
Antofagasta (4h),
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1h) and
Lisbon (2h) before unlocking my first energy recovery location in
Cagliari (4h) and then the next one in
Lagos (8h).

That is a difference of 16 h or 2560 Energy points only for the first energy recovery location.

And for the second one? The difference for the 2nd one is 20 hours or 3200 Energy points.

That is a total difference of 5760 Energy points. If you are lucky to be able to play smart and use it in an Epic battle with a PP Booster, that would be a difference of 1728 Prestige Points... And that means probably some (missed) rewards...

And that is the calculation only for 2 energy recovery locations.

However, there is a saying in Croatian at least:

Spilled milk is not worth crying over.

So what is the best we could do in our current situation?

#3 Lesson Learned : Begin in Energy Recovery Location (Kaohsiung -> Shanghai)

Begin your Amazing Journey by landing preferably in Kaohsiung [1h] and then unlock Shanghai [4h] next.

Why? That way you unlock your first energy recovery location within an hour, and the next one in Shanghai in the next 4 hours, which would give you a strong energy recovery boost when energy recovery rate is usually low at the beginning of event. This would also give you competitive advantage over players who try to catch up and collect energy recovery locations later or land in other energy recovery locations that take longer to unlock.

#4 Lesson Learned : Collect all Energy Recovery Locations as soon as possible.
How to do that?

Smart Approch

So, there are 7 energy recovery locations left to be collected,
2 of them in North America,
4 of them in Asia and
1 of them in Europe.

However, Umea is pretty isolated from the other Energy recovery locations and pretty far away to the North. So it's not a priority for now...

That leaves us with a dilemma...
North America vs. Asia

Cali-Polokwane Dilemma
or North America vs. Asia Fork

Which way to go?
To the North, or to the East?

North America:
Culiacan [9h] and then 6 more to
Saint Paul [6h]

vs.

Asia:
Shanghai [16h] and then 1 more to
Kaohsiung [1h] and then 7 more to
Xining [7h].

So, let's say we have two alternatives:
1st: Unlock North American energy recovery locations first, then continue to the Asian ones.

2nd : Unlock Asian energy recovery locations first, then continue to the North American ones.

Which one is better and by how much?

Let's compare how much energy they recover until all of them are unlocked and collected.

So the initial situation is the same in both cases as we don't get any energy from these 5 locations. And the final situation is the same in both cases as we end up with 5 energy recovery centers in the same amount of time - 39 hours.
What differs is the order of unlocking and activating the centers and the interim durations and amounts of energy recovery. Here is is summerized in a table... Try to make sense of the data or ask me below in comments if something is not clear.

To sum it up, it pays more to collect the North American energy recovery locations first, and then to continue to the Asian ones, at least in my case and based on my starting location at Porto Alegre. And although there are more energy centers in Asia (3, ok 4 actually) the ones in North America are significantly closer and faster to unlock, so the end result in energy recovered is higher for the first case, that is, traveling to North America first, and then to Asia.

One more thing to clarify. There are 4 energy recovery locations in Asia, the 4th one being Mumbai, but it's out of the way compared to the other 3 in Asia, which share significant part of the path. So Mumbai can be analyzed separately for that reason and that's why it has lower priority.

After solving this problem, based on my starting location and the locations already unlocked, to set the unlocking path to be the following:

1. Cali
2. Oaxaca
3. Culiacan
4. Tallahassee
5. Saint Paul
Cairo
Dammam
Mumbai
Polokwane
Jizan
Bangkok
Shanghai
Kaohsiung
Kunming
Lhasa
Xining

After Saint Paul being unlocked, there still opens up a dilemma which route to follow next:
Cairo-Dammam-Mumbai or Polokwane-Jizan-Bangkok-Shanghai.
My intuition tells me that Polokwane-Jizan-Bangkok-Shanghai route should be followed as it makes it easier to unlock 3 Asian energy recovery locations in China, but we should do a calculation first to be sure.

Cairo-Polokwane Dilemma

Similarly as for Cali-Polokwane Dilemma we could do the calculations for Cairo-Polokwane Dilemma as well. After performing the calculations, it showed that my intuition was right.

In order to maximize the recover energy rate the best way forward is to follow the unlocking China -> India -> Sweden path, htat is first to China, then to India and lastly to Sweden as it gives 15520 Energy points in 47 hours (compared to India -> Sweden -> China path which would give 12160 Energy points or alternatively India -> China -> Sweden path which would be a slightly better one, but still suboptimal).

That would finally define the optimal location unlocking order in order to maximize on energy recovery rate.

1. Cali
2. Oaxaca
3. Culiacan
4. Tallahassee
5. Saint Paul
6. Polokwane
7. Jizan
8. Bangkok
9. Shanghai
10. Kaohsiung
11. Kunming
12. Lhasa
13. Xining
14. Cairo
15. Dammam
16. Mumbai and finally
17. Antalya
18. Moscow
19. Umea
My Amazing Maiden Voyage: Day 1 | How the Queue Works & Energy Recovery

Although I started playing this game 14 years ago, this is my first time participating in The Amazing Journey event.
Or is it a challenge?

Anyway, so it is my maiden voyage actually.

So, let's toast to that...

I just hope it doesn't end like Titanic's maiden voyage.

Iron Maiden - Maiden Voyage. Click on the image above to listen to the whole album.

So what is this event about?
It seems like a lot of small print comes attached...

Thanks to Nesto222, a player from Croatia, it was much easier to get an overview of what is where and how long it would take to collect it. So feel free to express your gratitude to him. I believe it took a lot of time and effort to create that map.

Click on the map to follow the original link to it. It seems it's part of a much greated eRepublik tool effort named Platools.
Image that perhaps comes in mind would be something like this...

The NightCafe Creator has helped me halucinate this image of Plato using his Tools.

Being programmer myself it would be interesting to participate in web development project like that...

Since being relatively low on energy bars (12) and currency (30000), as well as on Energy capacity (1500), I wanted to set my goals to be modest and prioritize.

So the most impactful prize for me would be collecting a permanent Energy Center, which is located in Africa in Nigeria, more precisely in Maiduguri.
But should I start there?

#1 Lesson Learned - How the Queue Works

From the rules as I understood them, I thought putting several locations in the queue will start countdown on all of them parallelly.
Well, I was wrong about that. It counts down only the first one in the queue so the countdown is sequential, not parallel. That means unlocking the locations one by one in the queue order.

So I thought if I started from Maiduguri, I couldn't put more than 1 location in the queue and after unlocking Maiduguri and Kano I would be blocked for 8 hours to unlock Lagos.

On the other hand, I would have my first Energy center in only 2 hours from the start, and 2 of them in 11 hours. That would have been a better option perhaps.

Anyway, what I could read from the map is that Cape Town and Porte Alegro are the only 1 h unlockable locations that are neighboring each other.
So one of them might be a good starting location.

I chose Porto Alegre as my starting point as it would enable me quick opening and variety of locations to choose from, that unlock relatively quickly, expanding rapidly from South America to Africa and Australia, Europe and later North America and Asia, so I could optimize my unlocking sequence with more options to chose from rather sooner than later.

And I might get some temporary Energy centers in Porto Alegre (220) and Cape Town (350) quickly, improving my energy storage capacity rather quickly.

Besides, Maiduguri and the permanent center is not far away and a couple of quick wins at the beginning might boost my motivation and give me a good start.

The downside - as Clopoyaur has warned me, I would be relatively far from Energy recovery locations. But I was willing to pay that price and would catch up later, hopefully soon enough...

So after securing Porto Alegre (1 h) and Cape Town (1 h) and expanding my energy centers, adding to that Salvador and Antofagasta to unblock the road (4 h each), my priorities have shifted.

#2 Lesson Learned - Energy Recovery is the Priority

I have realized that like in any weekly challenge, ramping up your energy recovery rate quickly is the most important. It gets you farther in the weekly challenge and/or it saves you energy bars.
----

So I need to maximize my Energy Recovery speed and secure Energy Recovery locations. There are 10 of them:

North America
1 Saint Paul, USA 2 14 16 6
2 Culiacan, Mexico 4 6 10 3

Africa
3 Lagos, Nigeria 8 0 3 2
4 Maiduguri, Nigeria 2 3 5 4

Europe
5 Cagliari, Italy 4 2 0 1
6 Umea, Sweden 8 9 17 10

Asia
7 Shanghai, China 4 12 16 6
8 Kaohsiung, China 1 16 17 8
9 Xining, China 4 15 19 9
10 Mumbai, India 2 12 14 5

So how to get there?
What would be the priorities?
How to optimize it?
And in which order it would be optimal to get there and collect them?

We shall discuss that in the next update, on the Day 2 of My Amazing Maiden Voyage...

End of Day 1 - Results

I am ending my first day of the Amazing Journey with 7 unlocked locations (6 collected) and my first energy recovery location in Cagliary, Italy.

And my 2nd recovery location Lagos, Nigeria is about to be unlocked soon (in an hour from now).

Currently at the end of the Day 1 of the journey, I am at 4,534 prestige points and 2764/2900 Energy with 500 Energy/h Recovery rate (50 Energy/6 min).

Since my prestige point situation looks pretty bad considering the 90000 prestige points weekly challenge goal post, I opted to mitigate that with an Amazing Journey pack (9.9 Eur).
Media Activity

And my currency situation improved significantly yesterday when I won a pyramid on Clopoyaur's Twich Channel.

It was my first participation in Clopoyour's games and I won a pyramid. Beginner's Luck, I would say...

I gave away half of it... Because it is nice to share...

And today (tonight) there will be a 16000 Gold pyramid organized by Clopoyaur.

Clopoyaur 7 minutes ago
The biggest Pyramid ever, 16.000 Gold takes places tonight on Clopoyaur TV!

All details here: erepublik.com/en/article/2774084

So I am currently standing at
Distance Traveled : 237,641 km
Amazing Coins: 400
Gold : 628
Currency: 242,643 HRK

Otherwise the situation would look pretty much hopeless...

So please, let me know how you stand after day 1? I hope you stand better than I do, especially if you are more experienced at this...

Sincerely Yours,
Janko Fran
