Shifting Alliances - An Historical Perspective

Day 2,266, 15:27 Published in USA Peru by Hazelrah

It can be both exciting and painful for an old player to return to the eWorld.

On one hand, the game still has many of the elements that first attracted me to it:
Politics, Diplomacy, Economics, Competition, War, and Big Personalities which Gnilraps so eloquently outlined in his recent article.

On the other hand, the War module has become progressively more and more influential (and costly).

The other thing that became most apparent in this recent return, is the waning fervor and energy from the oldest and most experienced players. As the game has become progressively less dynamic, the population has declined, and it seems to have led to some boredom and disillusionment in the upper echelons.

This creates a great opportunity for new players, but there are still many years of experience there that should be tapped as often as possible.

I don't have a solution. I wish I could pay off the admin so we could return to the old mechanics, but I can't.
I do promise, however, to try and bring some excitement, energy, and positivity to a country whose overall morale seems rather complacent. Props to the WildOwl administration for trying to keep things interesting on the international stage.

This game has always been as fun and active as the citizens have chosen to make it, and I am here to have a good time, cynics be d*mn*d! Are you with me?!

The world is also in a time of transition. TWO has fallen and new allegiances are forming. Some in this country have responded with criticism at our leaderships' choice of new allies because of what they perceive as a negative history. How can we side with Poland, Spain, and the UK after the way they've treated us?

In response, here's a quick history of major alliances.

You'll notice a cyclical nature to the alliances, and countries like USA-Canada who were the first to attack each other in eRepublik can quickly become bros, and then years later decide the gig is up. That's just the way it goes. All alliances dissolve, and when they do - former allegiances shift often with little regard for historical contempt. After all, it's just a game.

April 2008 USA-Canada War
The US economy was in severe deflation, and president Saikiliah had signed MPPs with all nations sharing a southern border (remember at the time there were substantially fewer countries.)
Canada was the only country remaining that we could attack without violating MPPs, and it was thought expansion would solve many of the country's economic problems.
On April 7th, 2008 upon the release of the War module, the US attacked Manitoba. Canada received substantial international support and was largely able to fend off the attack.
