Sense, Sensibility, and a Lack Thereof

Day 754, 14:12 Published in USA USA by Cody Franklin

Good evening, future tanks.

Very recently, our dear administrators put into place a new training system, one which they fallaciously believed would revolutionize the way we build up strength. Allow me to explain how this new system operates.

Without any real ado, it can simply be said that the new system rewards the richest players. It does this by adding a percentage bonus for increasing amounts of gold paid, up to a 200% bonus for 1.8 gold. For weaker, though richer players, this is absolutely delightful, as they can get many of the benefits of eRepublik without all of the strenuous labor usually involved. For the older players, however, this new system is a curse - one which spits in the face of their hard work, and laughs in the face of protest.

Something that many journalists here in the New World have been very vocal about is that, if this new system is kept, all of the time and effort of older players will have amounted to very little in the grand scheme of things. Many citizens have been here for several months, if not years, watching this world grow and develop. These same citizens see it as a large insult on the part of the administrators to institute such a grossly overpowered system, as it is seen as something which rewards privileged plutocrats instead of providing equal opportunity for all members; furthermore, it is often argued that new players, trapped in a world of "two-clicking", will be very turned off by developments like these, since they will start with such a disconcerting disadvantage, especially when compared to richer or long-time players who have absurdly high levels of both wealth and strength. A quote from the animated movie The Incredibles captures the sentiments of players everywhere who have worked relentlessly for what they have: "When everyone's super... no one will be."

The system's proponents argue that it will simply reward people who work diligently to earn the gold to pay for such expensive training. They maintain that older players tend to have larger fortunes, which means that the system benefits eRepublik's elders more than anyone else; additionally, supporters hold that new players will have more goals to shoot for, and another incentive to participate in the global economy, whether by supporting a market, or even starting a business. They argue that such profits will open up more lucrative training opportunities, allowing newer players to quickly fit in with the rest of the world by being at a high enough strength level to impact battles after two-clicking enough times to reach level 5.

Overall, a majority of players believe that the administrators have lost their credibility for the time being, and have shattered the illusion of their sense and sensibility. While the program itself hasn't been operational for a particularly long amount of time, current conditions and staggering backlash suggest that the eRepublik team may have to take this idea back to the drawing board, if not scrap it entirely. Still, whether you love it, hate it, or could care less about it, remember: truth takes no sides.
