yes Bhane got it right

He picks one stone in his closed fist without revealing it. He heaves the stone as far as he can so it falls out of sight. Then he tells the queen to check the bag. Whatever color stone is left is NOT the stone he chose.

Since the only stone left in the bag is black, then logic dictates that he chose the white stone, and is allowed to go free.

next Sunday i wont be writing a riddle
and i will not be running for congress

I won the joy of figuring out riddles. I used to love riddle books as a kid. Mysteries, and puzzles, and logic problems, and whatnot. There need not be a prize for a game to be enjoyable.
