Re-Election and Slovakian Statement
Rangeley
First of all, I would like to thank everyone who participated in yesterday's election. Once again, the turnout was record breaking - along with closeness of the election. It went down to the wire right to the end, and I am very thankful that I was granted a second mandate as President of Austria. I would like to thank Querb helping to keep this a clean and respectful campaign. This the second presidential election I ran in, and the second time it has remained this way, so for that I am grateful once again.
Changes to the cabinet continue to be finalized, and I expect to announce the full cabinet tomorrow. For now, however, there are a few announcements.
Mutual Protection Pact Change
Today, we learned that the rules of mutual protection pacts are changing. Activated MPP's no longer will remain in action indefinitely - rather, they will end with the expiration of the MPP itself on a monthly basis. The significance of this is very large. Whereas previously, wargames involved a one time signing of an MPP, now they will require a monthly renewal. With the change in MPP prices, this means a joint monthly cost of 200 gold per nation just to keep the MPP's active - in addition to any further costs associated with being involved in a wargame.
For small nations such as Austria, this could prove a very large price indeed. But the implications go on - this leaves small nations particularly vulnerable to invasions from larger nations when combined with the price change. Continued security, in a state of open war, would be reliant on having the resources to renew a sufficient amount of MPP's on a monthly basis. The task of defending smaller nations from aggression has become all the more difficult. This is a vital opportunity for PEACE GC to rise to the occasion, and return to the founding principles around which it was created by devoting its energy towards their defense.
Statement on Slovakia
Shortly after the announcement on mutual protection pacts was made, we were greeted with the news that our ally, Hungary, had completed its invasion of Slovakia, destroying the small neutral nation. This act was done under the stated guise of 'freeing Slovakia' of the 'threat of invasion.' And it comes after a previous diplomatic proposal, to join Hungary in a form of a union, was rejected by Slovakia some time ago in favor of continued independence. Not only have the wishes of Slovakia been ignored, but the very goal and mission of PEACE GC has been ignored in pursuit of empire.
These disappointing acts set a horrible precedent. If PEACE GC turns a blind eye to the naked aggression shown by its own members towards much weaker nations, it will have absolutely no credibility to then criticize others who later do the same. The recent invasions of Croatia, Greece, America, and Finland were defended most frequently through stating "at least they aren't small neutral nations." This rubicon has now been passed. It is our responsibility to both call for the Hungarian withdrawal from Slovakia, and condemn this shameful act of aggression against a much smaller nation.

Nucking futs dawg
I'm not sure my friend about this Slovakia issue.
I would'nt call Slovakia a neutral country, as she was not from the very moment when she decided to host our enemy training wars.
Do we have to wait untill they announce their full membership like Bosnia did ?
Yet nobody says anything about TO of Belgium which is on the run by Romania !? Not even you ?? And UNL is our trusted ally !?!?!?
I'm sorry, but eWorld is not a peacefull world, we have 2 major rival alliances , so if we don't do nothing we will one day wake up in TO-ed country by sneaky rivals or find our walls packed up with EMC troops.
So it is just us or them, and Slovakia made a choice. Believe me, we from eSerbia know how it is, to be overruned, massacred (our first baby boom ), TO-ed etc ... you name it, we suffered it.
Slovakia can be if it will pose no threat in future, they broke their neutrality and as the weakest link in EDEN alliance, they were erased ... us or them, my friend ...
After all, this is a game of strategy, deception, and above all - constant war 🙁
Half of the people would'nt play it anyway if there was no war invloved 😉
Agree, let's call for Hungary to withdraw.
On a related note, what does this change do for training war games?
Good article Rangeley and I'm glad to see you taking the time for your first article on re-election to speak out against the inexcusable actions of your own allies. That is true commitment to the cause that PEACE GC was supposed to stand for.
Re: Denis - The wargames had EDEN nations in them, but were not EDEN wargames. Slovakia ultimately was a neutral nation.
Re: Cayne - We are set for the month, but once the MPP with Malaysia expires we will no longer have access to the wargame and would need to sign a new MPP.
Ouch! So the current practice of having wargames + 1 defence pact would cost Austria 300 gold a month (assuming our alliance partner pays 100 gold for the mpp with us - though I have to admit, I don't really see why they should do this). That is harsh. Or rather impossible to finance. This will require both rethinking of our foreign/defence and economic policy.
My opinions:
We have no real hostile borders and I would regard wargames more important than having a single mpp (which is not enough against any possible enemy anyway).
We really have to check the balance, how much gold Austria makes right now. But wether we want it or not, we probably have to rethink either the low tax course of action, the no state company policy or the not much involvement in currency trading principle, or even all three. 200 gold a month is a bit of a stretch.
I might agree about strengthening ourselves through war games over a tight alliance over the short term. But in the long term I think we're better off finding tight alliances.
The economy must be about to change too. That may alter the amount central governments can bring in via taxes. Any thoughts on that?
Slovakia is a neutral nation. I should know. I have experience as an Ambassador to Slovakia when I was in the eUS.
I did learn their opinions on alliances. The prevailing opinion was either neutrality or Panslavix, which is the name for a proposed alliance of Slavic countries. Yes, EDEN countries took part in WARGAMES. PEACE countries were invited, but apparently declined (I read the articles in the Slovakian media).
Yes "this is a game, not RL, it's just war, blah blah". Well, if PEACE GC is a "defensive alliance" well it has to live up to that. Annexing a neutral country does not count. If imperialism is OK in this game, well stop pretending you oppose it. That's the Orwellian stuff that gets people annoyed at PEACE.
Well, well.. I was actually wondering if you will take a stand against what the Hungarians have done. Congratulations!
The mpp thingy will prove quite a problem for all small countries I think. And it will affect the training-wars strategy ( which we have to admit, was pretty stupid ).
Slovakia was a NEUTRAL country. As someone said, there were at least 8 other neutral countries taking part in the training war. Slovakia was never a threat to Hungary..
So what choice do you talk about @Denis Cicic? Hand over all your regions or we will take them anyway? What on earth gives the Hungarians the right to say whether what Slovakia does ( training war with some EDEN countries ) is good or bad?
Stoneman: "I might agree about strengthening ourselves through war games over a tight alliance over the short term. But in the long term I think we're better off finding tight alliances."
Well, think about it this way: Tanks are mobile anyway, so it's really only about the broad population. With 1 alliance at a time, we don't stand a chance against any determined attacker (be it from EDEN or PEACE). It's really more of a symbolic thing. Look at Slovakia. They had mpps to Canada and Poland and they lost 0:4 against single Hungary. On the flipside: We have about 100 rather weak fighters (again, our tanks are mobile anyway). Would you spend 100g for an alliance with us? I would go as far as say that a single defensive pact is useless.
On a similar note: Rangeley, please investigate a cooperation between you and Querb. He had rather interesting plans for a baby boom (the only thing we really need). As this would be the best course of action for eAustria, I hope you can cooperate on this and it's not a plan he would only do as a president. Maybe appoint him somewhere in the MoI?
Didn't Querb quit his seat in congress and leave the country?
Austria probably needs to find a big brother, huh? A powerful nation that is willing to stand up for us. Even if we have to pay some part of their fees for the alliance.
Did you notice that the President of eSlovakia was Polish?
(Also in their congress was many Polish players.) I don't think you should look at them as a neutral country.
So by your standards they weren't neutral because they were polish? Then I guess that makes eAustria pro-EDEN since most of us RL Americans?
@Alfred Ball:
In my opinion, they weren't neutral because a polish group PTO-ed them.
If you did a TO in eAustria and in the background you support the US, then your 2nd question would make sense. But I think you are eAustrian players in eAustria, not pro-EDEN or what.
I think we need to really consider the value of training wars and defensive MPPs. This really increases the value of good diplomacy (which Rangeley is great at). As has been mentioned a defensive MPP would probably not prevent a military TO anyway. Some downside to the training wars is that it has killed the local market for housing and higher quality food. If people did not get a free 50 wellness every day, they would have to reconsider the best way to maintain their wellness. This could be great for our economy.
@Rangeley
"The wargames had EDEN nations in them, but were not EDEN wargames"
Well, let's see when Ukraine joins EDEN (is TO-ed at the moment), and RoBelgiuMania too , and Moldavia (also TO-ed by ROM)... and Slovakia was under strong influence of EDEN and was definitely next in line to join.
I don't understand all this mess about this attack, (EDEN)Polish did it when they attacked Lithuania with similar motive - to disrupt our TW (and to get some Lit land, some High grain maybe), the only diference is - they failed, we did'nt. Let's be an alliance, Slovakia will get their independence back anyway once we remove EDEn influence (Polist TO team) from it 😉
Don't fall to enemy propaganda pls ...
It is a fascinating idea that Austria could probably jump pretty far ahead if they dropped out of training wars. We may be able to solve economic problems a lot quicker than surrounding nations and become a model for other nations if we did that. Of course, if we did that we may also be able to buy the allies we need.
Of course, the politics of that is very hard.
@Denis Cicic
"Slovakia was under strong influence of EDEN"
I doubt it. But even so, what do you expect from a country which was confronted with an ultimatum and repeated REAL TO attempts by Hungarians?
Ukraine is under no TO at the moment..
Also, on planet Earth, there are, among others, two countries: Romania and Moldova. Both are inhabited by the same people. ( same blood, same history, same language ).Tell me how can a Romanian attempt takeover in a Romanian country.
If a neighbor quietly listens to a type of music you don't like, do you think beating him up would make him change his preference? And no, I don't really agree with what Poland had done.
Denis Cicic: short conclusion after reading your "brilliant comment"
Every country who has anything common with EDEN is "TO-ed"
ROTFLMAO!
