Random Thoughts About the Rental Proposal

Well the cat's out of the bag now. 1ronman has released the Closed Door discussion for all of eCanada to see.

When Dade first announced the proposal in closed door I thought it would be met by open arms except by the usual suspects. With my cabinet masking I was able to see it all unfold. It surprised me when several people whom I thought were proponents for game mechanics spoke out against it, and eventually vehemently opposed it even with input from military commanders.

The logic was simple: Poland gets Manitoba which would be an amazing boon to their economy (they didn't even ask for titanium), EDEN becomes a hell of a lot stronger, and we get licenses plus 3k gold a month. Unfortunately precedent from earlier debates about renting our titanium, mixed with threats, insults, and for some reason doubts about EDEN seeing this through derailed the thread and eventually the whole thing turned into a flame war.

Opposition to Dade was already pretty high what with the problems carried over from the nea milosu administration, as well as lingering tension after the election. A [legit] impeachment seemed very near.

Watching this whole thing unfold, I was biting my teeth, thinking that this was finally a way for Canada to become relevant again, but most thought it was too dangerous even though the risk was all on Poland and Ireland, while role players spouted their usual stuff. Where the 3k gold per month would go was also an issue, but lower income taxes across the board might have been a solution; however, more time was spent attacking each other than looking at this question. Meanwhile a couple of cabinet ministers snapped, and they along with 1ronman, who wasn't even in a government position, said a few words that inflamed congress and only undermined the discussion.

My disgust with how the debate turned out prompted me to volunteer for the temporary exchange with the US army. Now Poland will most likely be renting out from the US instead, and crap is flying everywhere on the political scene again.

For nearly half my eLife, Canada comes at each other's throats like this, and it's clear to me now that Canadians would rather fight each other than fight against another country. This is what we've asked for, and this is what we get.
