Ramblings of a Wayward Monkey

I was born on Day 622 of the New World. I created my account and watched the tutorial video. After 20 minutes of fiddling with my avatar in Photoshop to fit poorly explained requirements for upload, I was ready to begin my new elife.
The Job Hunt
This was very easy. I had a choice between a Q1 gathering or a Q1 gathering job. I went with Q1 gathering.
Training
I went to the Army and Trained for the day.
Well That was the end of my first day.
Now what?
I stumbled upon the eUS Forums and spent a couple of hours reading about the community.
A post I found extremely valuable is dmalicious's eUSA FAQ. It is laid out in a way that new players will find incredibly easy to follow.
The second Important link I found was Quick Access to eUSA IRC (Chat) . Though I only spent a couple minutes on there before firing up mIRC, it introduced me to the eUS IRC channels. There are quite a few actually and I am including only a partial list here.
eUS Channels
#usa-chat Core eUS Channel. Start here.
#wiki eRep Wiki channel with some funny off the wall conversations.
#usdebate Lively conversations about the eUS Politics with a semblance of debate style control.
Party Channels
#aap-party America's Advancement party
#cvp3 Consevative Victory Party
#uip United Independents party
#uslibs Libertarian Party
#uswpchat United States Workers Party
I am sure there are more Political channels and would love to find them, but these are the only ones that came up over the past 3 days while i was on.
Most every other country has IRC channels as well. Joseph Schmo posted a list of them here: International IRC List
I know the first few days are pretty slow, but there is more to this game than simply eRepublik.com. I would go so far as saying most of the games takes place outside of the actual eRepublik site.

Meh, you're lucky. The only job I found (while I was at Alaksa, Canada) was a company that apparently moved. I was lost without a job for a while...
