anybody else creeped out by jamesw 😮
Good and interesting listening material.
People play erep because of the lack of purpose and meaning in their "RL"s. They come here to fill the void. Do they succeed? Hell no, but erep promises even more than the illusions of RL with it's medals and pompous titles and positions. We build these government and military superstructures to fill the void in erep, after we're only here in the first place because of the void in RL. It's a void within a void - a desperate search for control. That's why people hate the admins so much - they deny you control.
It's not about living out fantasies, it's about living full stop. It's the community and social aspect that people always cite as being the most attractive thing about erep, not the grand empires and becoming president.
Ironically erep is so powerful because it emulates RL so much. Playing a game like warcraft is similar but not as addictive because it's so clearly fantasy. Erep promises something that is actually really like RL. Like Hassan said, it's a "RL emulator".
Is this a good thing? People are here because they're looking for satisfaction, so if it gives them that isn't it a good thing? Absolutely not. Easing the disillusionment of RL with another illusion cannot work - does erep really make you happy? The solution to your problem is anywhere but here. Real satisfying life is elsewhere.
In after faggy comment
Have you noticed erep is only fun when you're not actually playing erep?
Johno, I play erep, so that I can give you a big hug. oh and because a social strategy can be entertaining, if you don't remove all the fun elements and replace with communism.
"Every day people are denied an authentic life and sold back it's representation." - Larry Laws.
This basically sums up what I'm talking about. Erep sells you a representation of the RL you don't have.
Your right Johno, I don't own a tank company in RL. Would you like the hug now?
Yes I would. Now what? Oh that's right, this isn't RL - it's a representation of RL.
"The spectacle is the flip side of money. It, too, is an abstract general equivalent of all commodities. But whereas money has dominated society as the representation of universal equivalence — the exchangeability of different goods whose uses remain uncomparable — the spectacle is the modern complement of money: a representation of the commodity world as a whole which serves as a general equivalent for what the entire society can be and can do. The spectacle is money one can only look at, because in it all use has already been exchanged for the totality of abstract representation. The spectacle is not just a servant of pseudo-use, it is already in itself a pseudo-use of life." - Guy Debord
Cool Podcast. Sound quality is shit, but it's a nice concept with interesting people and good editing. More of this please!
(Otherwise, all we got left on the podcast front are drunken Americans swearing a lot and making gay jokes)
