Subject: Fox Hunting Behind Glass

Prague, Northern Bohemia, Czech Republic
Day 4,280, eRT 10.01

I walked carefully over to the blonde haired body using as much cover as possible. The other two might still be in the vicinity. I knew my team were watching over me. We normally left them for the cleanup crew to deal with, but we knew this was one Father really wanted either captured or killed and had put a hefty bounty on his head, so I said I'd check him out personally.

As I got closer I could see his chest rising and falling, he was still alive but bleeding out. There was a growing pool of blood under him. The clear summer sky made the dark blood almost shimmer.

I stood over him, pulling out my pistol to finish him off before turning his head to get a good closeup look at his face. I heard him murmur "Take care sis, baby bro." before turning his head slowly to look at me. His pale blue eyes were full of pain, sadness and loss and I saw immediately it was who we had thought it was, Liam O'Malley, or the Blind Fox as he was better known. Blood was bubbling out of his mouth and covered his lower face and mustache. I knelt down beside him staring into his eyes, carefully placing my pistol back in its holster. I had never been this close to my fish when they died before. I felt curious, I stayed there knelt in the heat, only moving when his blood pooled near my boots. I also felt a smile coming and I rocked on my heels to study him from a different angle.

His breathing was ragged and his chest heaved with each breath as he clung to life. Leaning forward and placing a hand on his chest so I could feel the final rise under it, with the other I curiously poked a finger into the hole my bullet had made. Interested in the mortal damage I’d done, I wriggled another finger in, widening the puncture. I felt around until I touched something hard buried deep inside. I pulled out my knife and dug a bit, his hand lifted weakly and tried to push it away but I ignored it and smiled harder as he moaned faintly. It was hard work in that heat but finally I got it, the remains of my bullet. I hacked a piece of cloth off a clean part of his uniform with my knife and wrapped it up, putting it in my breast pocket for safe keeping. I wiped my crimson hands on one of the few clean spots on his uniform. I stood up and looked down the alley the other two fish had gone. Pity, that big guy had pulled her away so quickly. It would have been nice to have all three. They were such valuable trophies, I would remember them for later. I heard a cough and looked down in time to see him cough up a splash of blood, before he stopped moving. The light died in his eyes. So strange. I straightened up to call my team.

Annie's voice came over the Comms "I see you, you know you shouldn’t be out there. Is it him?"

"Yes, call for transport and get Karl to bring a body bag." I answered switching off my Comms. It wasn’t fair. I’d made the shot but we’d all share in the rewards...

They all soon joined me staring down at him. "One of the others was his sister, we can't mention that or we'll be in the hot seat for not getting her." I said. The others nodded in agreement we had all seen what happened to those who disappointed Father.

I stared out the helicopter window all the way back to base. I felt conflicted. I was excited to bring home an O’Malley to Father but I was worried the others would rat me out about the two that got away, the deserter and the girl O’Malley. I was also angry with the suppliers of my rifle I'd have got the other two, they were right there in my sights if the weapon hadn't jammed after the first shot.

Ramat haGolan, Israel
Day 4,280, eRT 14.00

By the time we landed, the news had spread that something special was being brought in. The elite guard were holding back the regulars as we jumped down from the helicopter and helped load the body bag on a stretcher. Father himself soon appeared on the heli-pad. Without a word he pulled back the zipper. I couldn’t tell if he was glad or not. He just stared down at the body for a long time before ordering it be taken to the morgue. His entourage took the bodybag away and he walked with them. He stopped briefly at the heli-pad steps.“Come to my office in one hour.” he said in that chilling, metallic voice I’ve learned to both fear and adore.

We all headed to our quarters to clean up before seeing Father. I must say I do enjoy the privilege of being one of his favourites. We get our own rooms and a Private who acts as our personal servant, seeing to our every need, all the Type 4s we want. I stripped out of my blood caked uniform on the way to the shower and dropped them as I moved. Lacey followed behind me, picking them up for cleaning. She’d failed training and now she was my “under study” and would be until I deemed her ready to retake the test. She was from some rural area of the U.S, I never bothered to ask where exactly. I enjoyed a few minutes in the hot shower before stepping out to a warm towel held by her. Lacey dried me off before I got dressed in a fresh uniform she had laid out for me. I then headed to the locked drawer where I kept my type 4s, carefully counting how many were left. She had found a way in and thought I won’t notice. She’d have to be punished but I hadn’t got the time.

I grabbed four of them and locked the drawer again while chewing them. I’ve found it’s the fastest way to get them in your system. I glared at Lacey. "These are mine, understand? So keep your filthy hands off them." She started to mumble some excuse so I raised my hand. She hung her head, fear bright in her eyes. She could probably remember all her previous misdemeanors and their harsh but fair consequences. "You will replace them before I get back or I'll tell Father and Father will kill you for failing me." I headed to the door. I looked back briefly from the doorway to see her sobbing. I sighed, another one I’d have to replace. Good help is so rare. It’s so hard to train them the way I like things done. I left in a mood.

The others were waiting in the corridor in their fresh clothes. We nodded at each other before heading to the Father's office feeling a bit nervous. Did he know we had two o'malley's in our sights? I swallowed that panic, I needed to look professional for him. I wanted him to praise me for a job well done. We walked into the office outside and his mute aide buzzed us in. Father was standing behind his oaken desk leaning forward with his hands resting on it. There were four large packets of type 4s on the desk placed neatly beside each other.

"These are for you Delta Unit, the 20,000 cc bounty has been paid into each of your geneWORLD accounts. Good job."

We all saluted and sounded off. "Thank you Sir!"

He looked us all over with his glowing red eye. "You didn't see the other two?"

I looked at him directly. "No sir!"

His expression was unreadable but he stared at me for what felt like minutes. It took all my nerve and composure to remain at attention. "That is unfortunate. I’m sure you’ll find them for me soon. He'll be on display for a few days for the regulars to see. I’m granting you two days leave. Stay within your boundaries. You know what will happen to all of you if even one of you step out of line. I want you to keep an eye out for the other two. At ease” He turned to the window, his back draped in his thick black-red cloak. “Oh, before I forget. Sergeant Astrid, you are now Lieutenant. Don’t let me down. Dismissed!"

I smiled as I replied "Thank you sir!"

I was elated, he’d rewarded me. I felt a wave of relief wash over me. The other filed out of the office. "Father, if it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to request an extra under study, I suspect my new one's stealing from me." I continued. He simply nodded and waved his hand in dismissal.

We stepped forward and took our pills before heading out the door back to our quarters, trying to avoid as many people as possible on the way. Lacey's big, doe like princess eyes dilated when she saw what I was carrying. As I packed them into my lockable drawer and could feel her eyes hungrily following them. I counted the loose ones, ten had been added. Hearing a noise I turned around two black clad, faceless elites standing in the doorway on either side of a terrified looking female Private. I nodded my thanks and they left. "Clean up my quarters, I expect to not find a single speck of dirt when I get back. Lacey, you will show her how I like things done. I'll deal with you later." I said before turning to the door dismissing them from my mind. Lacey curtseyed and the new under study, a short, plain looking grunt still in her regulars uniform quickly followed her lead. I thought that was kind of fun, a nice detail to cement her subservience to me.

I walked out to join my comrades in the Rec room, smiling to myself and feeling happy for the first time in a long time. A big trophy and big rewards. Today was a good day.

Signing off,
