Leinengen vs the Ants

Day 1,309, 12:33 Published in USA USA by George Armstrong Custer
Carl Stephenson's classic tale

of courage in the face of death.

Dateline: Tuesday June 21, 2011 (Day 1,309)
Location: California, USA
Reporter: Private George Armstrong "Old Man" Custer

The invasion is well underway.
We allowed Spain to stay even as our relationship soured, failed to evict her when she first showed hostility, and now she's torn a hole in our gut the size of half of Europe.
In the past days we've seen Hungary and Poland establish footholds on our mainland, and today they've begun to move inland.
Finally, Indonesia came. We know they would, first through Hawaii and now the battle for California rages.

It reminded me of one of my favorite old time radio stories, Carl Stephenson's Leinengen vs the Ants.
Most of you, I'm sure, are not familiar with the story in any form, so I bring it to you today in three different mediums, and I hope you'll take the time to read or watch or listen to at least one of them.

When you do, especially if you choose to listen to the radio play, I want you to close your eyes and imagine yourself as Leinengen.. and further, connect that image to your role in the game, and picture yourself as the whole of the United States, and fill yourself with the courage and determination of Leinengen.

Leiningen versus the Ants, by Carl Stephenson

“Unless they alter their course, and there’s no reason why they should, they’ll reach your plantation in two days at the latest.”

Leiningen sucked placidly at a cigar about the size of a corncob and for a few seconds gazed without answering at the agitated District Commissioner. Then he took the cigar from his lips, and leaned slightly forward. With his bristling grey hair, bulky nose, and lucid eyes, he had the look of an aging and shabby eagle.

“Decent of you,” he murmured, “paddling all this way just to give me the tip. But you’re pulling my leg of course when you say I must do a bunk. Why, even a herd of saurians couldn’t drive me from this plantation of mine.”

Escape; Jan 14, 1948, Starring William Conrad

You might remember Bill Conrad as the TV detective, Cannon, or maybe from the short-lived TV version of Nero Wolfe. I remember him best as Matt Dillon on radio's Gunsmoke.
Leinengen vs the Ants was done on radio five different times, with Bill Conrad in the lead role twice.

Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you... Escape!
Escape! Designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure!

This radio presentation holds very true to the story.

The Naked Jungle; 1954, starring Charlton Heston

It's 1901. At 19, tough, stubborn Christopher Leiningen came to South America and built levees to claim thousands of acres of Rio Negro river land for a chocolate plantation. Now 34, with no knowledge of women, he recruits a mail-order bride in New Orleans. She's beautiful, independent, and arrives ready to be his stalwart helpmate; however, no one has told him she's a widow. He rejects her. During the next week, as she awaits the boat to take her back to the US, they learn that legions of army ants will strike in a few days' time. She joins the fight to save the plantation; their courage and his probable loss of all he's worked for may crack his resolve to send her away.

The film takes the long way 'round to get to the Man vs Ants story.
