If you wish to buy food, weapons, and other basic necessities, you should get a job. There are many employers in Canada who are looking for employees to work for their businesses, most of them having a good salary. You can only work once a day, but you can work overtime with overtime points. You receive one overtime point every hour from each active house. Moose News wishes the best of luck to the new citizens of Canada on finding a job here.

Sound advice.

How does one acquire houses? What other benefits do they have?
Great question. Looking forward to someone's answer for the first one, particularly.
This is my main question:
Does a house let you make enough extra money in overtime to pay for buying the house, or even some extra cash on top of the cost?
Welcome back, Johnny.
Houses are on sale on the market. They don't give you extra energy but increases the size of your energy bar. Basically it allows you to store more energy for rapid use.
Take me for example. Without any house, my energy bar is at 650. That means that I can bank 650 energy to be used next time I eat. If my energy bar is already full, I can use 1,300 energy within a few minutes of fighting.
With a Q1 hous, my energy bar is increased by 50 energy to 700. Now my max is 1,400 energy.
Unless you plan on really getting into the game (which nobody even recommends anymore) you'll probably want to settle for a Q1 house. The added advantage is that it'll let you work 1 more time every day so as long as the cost of a house is less than 7 times your daily wage you won't lose money (you probably won't make a significant amount more, though) and then if you need that extra energy, it'll be there.
Oj!

I'd suggest working for a military unit. The 10 cad/day job +q7 weapons you get easily outpay the highest paid job/day.
If you don't have/use q7 weapons?
Oh no i dont use them either, you can sell the weapons. around 17 cad each. My unit gives 100 q7's per week if you work our job at 10 cad/day. While the highest paid job in the market pays around 90 cad per day?. So in a week you make 630 cad . If you join Cordis Die, you get 70 cad per week plus 100 q7 weapons. So 100 q7=1700 cad. Do the math 🙂 . You make almost triple the amount you would make at a normal job
There might be some conditions and requirments to meet before joining it tho, You can message and ask Rylde (hes usually drunk) so better option would be to ask this guy- http://www.erepublik.com/en/citizen/profile/1538632
