Jasper Signa's Guide to Time Management

Day 978, 16:07 Published in USA USA by Jasper Signa
How to do everything in 24 eHours?

One of the most unique aspects of V2 is the idea of time management and the added challenge of splitting your time between four main areas.

Working = Earning Money by working at a company
Training = Learning Military skills (Rifle, Artillery, Tank, AirUnit)
Studying = Learning Job Skills (Harvester, Technician, Project Manager, Producer, etc.)
Resting = Hanging out with the hot neighborhood chick to improve your Happiness

Since eRepublik is still on earth, although it's a pretty f$!%ed up earth if the Russians are winning battles against the USA, there are only 24 hours in a day to spend your time doing everything you need or want to do.

So the million dollar question is. . . What is the best strategy for maximizing the results you get each day?

Well as Derek Zoolander would say, I guess I’d have to answer your question with another question? What exactly are you hoping to accomplish?

And if your like 99% of ambitious Americans you’ll say,

“but Jasper. . . I want to do it all!”

As a recent player myself, I like most of you wanted to do everything. I wanted to be awesome at my job to make money, I wanted to help the eUSA achieve success against the Russians, I wanted to write article and practice ePolitics and do everything.

You know what though? I also wanted to date this girl. . .

but unless I win the Gold Lottery that isn’t going to happen. So what is a new player to do?

As a new player starting this game, you really need to think long and hard about whether you are interested in a largely military role or a civilian role to start out. Both are incredibly important to the success of the eUSA, but this decision is crucial to how you will spend your time. It is not a choice that you have to live with forever, but it is very important to think about how you are going to start out so you don’t end up trying to do it all and ending up stuck with low happiness and low wellness, digging through garbage to try and survive.

The Military Life

The eUS Military is one of the greatest fighting forces in the game, the men and women of the Airborne, Army, Calvary, Mobile Infantry, Marine, National Guard and Training Corp provide players of all skill levels and specialties a chance to fight and win on the e Battlefield.

Joining the eUS Military is not unlike joining the real service and the friendships and camaraderie of fighting alongside your fellow eAmericans is something to be proud of.

However, unlike V1 to be really effective on the battlefield as a super soldier you need to have more time to devote then a half hour each day. Battles in V2 are about timing and the side that wins is usually the one who can muster the most fighting men as battles are nearing the end. Battles are lost and won in the final hours of battles and if you are not available at the right time you may not be as successful as you want to be in helping win on the battle field.

Another thing to consider is that in the new V2, warfare is a gold sink, if your fighting against any of the more decent players they are probably using a booster of some kind to cause extra damage or use health kits to redeploy to the battle. While not required, if you have dreams of being an Uber soldier you should plan on spending at least some real life money buying gold as the training, healing and boosters are going to cost you Gold.

If you are going to focus on the military, Training is going to be the most important effort you undertake each day.

The Civilian Life

Not everyone wants or should want to be in the eMilitary, and frankly the organized mass battles of V2 makes it more difficult then ever for the beginning player to be helpful. However, this should not discourage people from playing the game as there are plenty of opportunities to have an enjoyable experience in the economic arena as well. Economic success is just as important as military victories, as your working helps raise money and gold for the eUSA through taxes, and helps build the Hospitals, Defense Systems and Weapons are troops need to succeed.

Through working at companies your labor contributes to productivity which is used to build all the materials, food, houses, moving tickets, weapons that people need. One of the biggest changes brought about in the V2 system is the concept of specialties with certain jobs being needed to make different products. While before any citizen could contribute productivity to any company he or she worked for in any industry, now citizens contribute productivity in relationship to what their skill level is.

This means that if a player is a Level 5 Harvester, they would contribute more for each hour of work they did in a Raw Material Industry (Stone, Iron, Oil, Grain etc.) then at other companies in different industries (Food, Rifles, etc.,) if their skill level is lower.

Company’s like to hire, skilled workers, who work reliably every day and do their work when they have high health and happiness (as close to 100 as you can muster). The reason for this is because hours worked when you are healthy and happy produce more productivity then when you work at 40 Health and 40 Happiness. Since you are payed on an hourly rate the same whether you contribute a lot or a little. American companies lose money if you are not working to your full potential by paying you the same rate whether you contribute a little or a lot.

Working while unhealthy and unhappy is a form of economic warfare and helps our enemies.

If you have limited time to play eRepublik each day then I HIGHLY encourage you to consider contributing on the home front through working at American companies. I would also encourage you to consider helping with the economy if you do not have the real life money to contribute to buying gold, at least until later on when you have a firm economic foundation to stand on.

Also if you are a new player and unsure if you like the game I would suggest first starting off with the economy as it can provide a way to make money and give you a better start to your e-life then starting immediately down the military path.

If you are opting for the civilian route though, do not think your contribution is not needed in the war effort as I think all civilians should help their country through the practice of Guerilla Warfare, talked about here.

If you are going to be an Economic Powerhouse your time should be spent mostly on studying and working.

Maximizing Your Potential

Okay, now that you have decided if you want to focus FIRST on the military or the economy I need to provide a brief discussion on basic game mechanics. As I mentioned earlier there are 4 areas where you can spend your time: Working, Training Studying and Relaxing; you can do each activity only once per day and each activity has a certain max and minimum amount of hours you have to work. Lets look at them for a second.

Time Management Activities

Working (minimum 4hrs, maximum 12 hrs)
-Provides Productivity and Slight Job Skill Points
-Provides you with a salary, hourly wage X hrs worked
-Provides +2 experience points for working any amount of time
-Subtracts 1 point of health for the quality level of the company you work at ranges from (1-5)
-Subtracts 1 point of happiness for EACH hour worked

Training (minimum of 2hrs, maximum of 12 hrs)
-Provides Military Skill Points (improves your skill in rifle etc.,)
-Provides +2 experience points for working any amount of time
-Subtracts 1 health
-Subtracts 1 happiness for EACH hour worked

Studying (minimum of 2hrs, maximum of 12 hrs)
-Provides Job Skill Points (improves your skill in a profession)
-Provides +2 experience points for working any amount of time
-Subtracts 1 health
-Subtracts 1 happiness for EACH hour worked

Relaxing (minimum of 1hr, maximum of 12 hrs)
-Provides 1 happiness for each hour worked (+1 for the free booster)
-Provides +2 experience points for working any amount of time

*Minimum Hours is only if you choose to do it. It is possible for example to not train or not study on one day and save 1 wellness or not work and save the wellness you would lose from working at your company.

While the first question you might ask is well how many training points, job skill points I get per hour worked. Good question but you probably do not really want to know how it works as it involves some complicated formulas and requires you to give me your first eBorn son.

Still interested? Are you sure, okay sign here and here. . . great, I am going to call him Jasper Junior.

Health Multiplier = 1 + (2 * Health / 100)
Happiness Multiplier = 1 + (2 * Happiness / 100)
Booster Bonus = Skill Points Gained * (Booster Percentage / 100)
Productivity = (0.5 * Employee Multiplier * Profession Skill Level * (Health Multiplier + Happiness Multiplier) * Hours Worked) + Booster Bonus

Military Skill Points Gained = (Military Skill Level * Health Multiplier * Happiness Multiplier * Hours Trained) + Booster Bonus
Job Skill Points Gained = 0.1 * Productivity
Study Skill Points Gained = (Profession Skill Level * (Health Multiplier + Happiness Multiplier) * Hours Studied) + Booster Bonus

Confused? Feeling unsatisfied? Remember this ONE important thing. The closer your Health and Happiness are too 100 the MORE points you get.

Do your focus when your happy and healthiest

So you spent about two to three minutes reading this article already and are probably bored and asking yourself, how does any of what I just read help me in spending my time better? Okay here it is.
Since your total Military Skill points and Studying Points are based on the combined rating of your health and happiness, and every other activity reduces both your health and happiness by hours worked; you should do whatever activity your focusing on FIRST and for the MOST hours possible.
For you military people, if you spend 12 hours training first with high happiness and health you will earn the most possible skill points. If you are doing economy and you are studying then you should study for 12 hours first. If you are trying to earn money by doing some work for the boss, do him or her a favor and do that FIRST!

A brief timeout for Relaxing:

That brings us to the subject of Relaxing. eRepublik is kind of devious in the fact that Relaxing is included at the bottom of the screen, is colored purple in your time sheet and has pictures of beds and stuff so most people do their relaxing last. I mean that’s how most people think. I work hard all day and then at the end of the day I carve out a few hours of me time.

This however, is the wrong approach for this game for a couple of reasons. Since your skill points are calculated based on your happiness and health ratio. The best time to do your relaxing is immediately after the longest activity you did. For example, let’s say that you were focusing on studying and you studied 12 hours with that hot girl named Gina.

If you were starting your eRepublik Day with 100 Health and 100 Happiness, after your 12 hour tutor session you would now be at 99 Health and 88 Happiness, not too bad. However, you would have earned the maximum possible skill points for all of those 12 hours since you started at (100, 100).
Now let us say you want to work for your company. If you worked now your productivity would be calculated at (99,8😎 not bad but not the best it could be.

If instead of working right away you went to your house to goof off with Lisa for lets say 6 hours before doing the night shift. You would have improved your happiness by seven points (6hr *1 + 1hr for free booster) or raised it from 88 to 95.

So now when you show up to work you are working at (99,95) which will make the boss a lot more happier and probably result in giving you a raise sooner.

This would/could apply to any activity you wanted to do second so if you were going to play hooky from work to go play rifleman with your buddies it would still give you a better return.

One important exception to this is if your happiness is already low, possibly by over training, living in a crappy house or eating broccoli instead of happy food like ice cream. Then it might make sense to back off your training for the day and maximize your relaxation first to help recover and then do your focus second.

Recommended Hours
So how should you spend your whole eDay? Well it depends slightly on what kind of food and house you own. At server reset you gain an amount of health and happiness back from the quality of your food and house. As a new player, you probably want to focus your attention on happiness food as that will be impacted the most and impact how many hours you have to waste relaxing. You should look to buy a food and house combination that matches your time requirements.

Studying Focus: Assuming Starting at (100, 100)
Study 12 hs, Relax 6 hrs, Work 4hrs, Train 2hrs
Total Health and Happiness from Food and Housing needed for (100, 100) = 3 health, 11 Happiness

Work Focus: Assuming Starting at (100, 100)
Work 12 hrs, Relax 6 hrs, Study 4hrs, Train 2 hrs
Total Health and Happiness from Food and Housing needed for (100, 100) = 3 health, 11 Happiness

Training Focus: Assuming Starting at (100, 100) and no injury fighting
Train 12 hrs, Relax 6 hrs, Work 4hrs, Study 2hrs
Total Health and Happiness from Food and Housing needed for (100, 100) = 3 health, 11 Happiness

IMPORTANT:
As a new player it is highly unlikely that you will NOT be able to purchase or be given food and housing to meet the requirements for this strategy. Never fear you can make up for short falls in happiness by either A lowering the number of hours in your focus or B foregoing one of the activities for that day.

Example if you only had 3 health and 6 happiness (food/house) you would need 5 more hours of relaxation to make up for the loss of happiness. You could achieve this by Studying 9 hours in your focus, relaxing 11 hrs, and working for 4 hrs.
The disadvantage of this strategy would be that you would lose the 2 experience points that you would normally get from the doing that last activity.

You can get a maximum of 8 XP a day by doing all 4 activities. So its always good to at least put the minimum time into each category if you care about reaching new experience levels

IMPORTANT:
If you are using any kind of boosters for your stats and you are not training a full 12 hrs and near max health and happiness. . . you are flushing your gold down the toilet.

Health and Happiness Calculator
One last thing for people that managed to read all the way down here. I made a basic spreadsheet to help you calculate your health and happiness. I am sure there are better calculators out there but this one is free.
