Cover Story: The War with eUS

Late last term (right after Parliamentary elections) Prime Minister Woldy attacked the eUS using the war that had been opened when we attacked their ally Norway during GLaDOS's term. Attacking the eUS also opened a war with their ally, the eUS-Romanian puppet state of Belgium. The eUK attempt to take Belgium from the Romanians was a failure however, as the eUS dealt enough damage to secure Flanders time and time again.

Attacking eUS also gave us an open war with Norway and Canada. Until recently, the only effect of that has been a trade embargo with Canada, raising the price of Diamonds and thus Gifts. However, the Canadian war has become very important.

The other day, Mr Woldy was, as you may know, re-elected with a spectacularly close 3-vote margin. As our attention was focused at home, however, the eUS elected a new president who promised (with the hidden caveat in his article of &quot😉o note this is completely for fun. Do you honestly think Jewitt is an idiot to tell the enemy when he'll attack? Let alone let the enemy know he's attacking xD&quot😉 to take London and Northern Ireland.

Instead, President Jewitt had the eUS declare war on Japan. The reason for this sudden offensive in the opposite direction was strategic: If the eUS could take Kyushu, it could then land swap with China to get to the Iranian and Hungarian held High Iron regions in China. These High Iron regions are key to the economy of the Phoenix alliance, funding the enormous treasuries of our allies in Hungary and Iran. The editor can attest that the cheapest Iron on the world market is very often in Hungary, and in high volume, as needed by companies supplied by Vanguard Inc.

If eUS were to take them, they have said that they would negotiate a lease with China on one of them. This would put masses of high iron region companies in the eUS market, allowing them to produce astronomical quantities of iron and thus weapons. The worldwide balance of power would shift, and our fair island would potentially fall into terrible danger.

The eUK was until very recently allied with Japan as members of the PEACE GC. We are now allied with Hungary and Iran through the Phoenix alliance. Our open war with eUS potentially allowed us to save Japan through the use of "Blocking." As explained in the previous issue a country that is under attack cannot itself attack. As long as the eUK attacked eUS they would be unable to attack eJapan, giving our allies time to Japan, ensuring its territorial integrity.

The eUS valued its plan of attacking Japan very strongly, so, rather than allowing themselves to be blocked, they retreated. To emerge from complete block, they retreated from NewJersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware. In attacking Pennsylvania, Prime Minister Woldy made a careful and deliberate choice to attack a region that bordered Canada rather than a region that bordered Spanish-occupied France (Maryland). It was believed that Canada was unlikely to attack us. This expectation proved to be wrong. To prevent us from retreating Pennsylvania as Canada attacked it, the eUS first started a Resistance War, making retreat unavailable. With the eUK no longer able to attack the eUS and keep it from attacking Japan, the eUS attacked. (It is important to note that for 24 hours after retreating from our attacks, we had "initiative" vs the eUS, meaning that they could not attack us. However, being blocked by Canada prevented us from attacking either).

So, the primary objective of our attacks on eUS was a failure. However, in escaping our blocking attack, the eUS handed us several regions, and considerable funds (worth about 170 gold, which is near the amount the eUK contributed to the costs of the attacks against eUS).

Because the Special Forces were deployed helping to successfully defend Kyushu from eUS, and because attempting to hold on to Pennsylvania when eUS has all of its alliances active against the eUK and the eUK has none would be frivolous, the eUK lost the Pennsylvania battle to Canada. The attacks by Canada continue in Delaware.

Educational Interlude: Qualities and Raw Materials

In eRepublik, every item has a quality between 1 and 5 (represented by stars). The quality of raw material items is a multiplier of how many raw material points they are worth in a manufacturing or construction company. (I.E. one Q5 Iron item gives 5 points of Iron vs 1 point of Iron from a Q1 Iron item). The quality of manufactured goods is supposed to be a multiplier on how effective they are and how much raw materials they consume. However, a higher-quality Moving Ticket simply consumes less wellness while costing twice as much in Raw Materials, making it useless. A higher-quality Gift is in fact more effective, precisely in proportion to the increased raw material cost. Few people use higher-quality Gifts, however. Higher-quality food is more effective when eaten, and there is great demand for higher quality food from citizens who don't get wellness through fighting or gifting.

Most in demand however of the manufactured goods are Weapons. Theoretically speaking, each person can consume up to 5 units of grain in their daily food, up to 20 diamonds in gifts, up to 20 units of oil if they move twice, and up to 125 units of Iron in Q5 weapons. Higher Quality weapons are more in demand than lower quality weapons, making the higher quality weapon industry extremely lucrative. Q1 weapons are quite profitable as well. All this demand for weapons makes for great demand for Iron. Iron prices worldwide are significantly higher than Oil or Diamonds prices and roughly double Grain prices. even though there are thousands and thousands of units of Iron being sold at any given moment.

High Iron regions are the only regions innately valuable, and several of them have accumulated immense quantities of persistent investment in the form of Iron companies.

Opinion:

This eUnited Kingdom needs war for excitement and for our economy. I would also like to see this eUnited Kingdom get a chance to reclaim our wayward American colonies for the crown. We are safe from conquest because of our strong and determined allies. They have not forgotten our military aid in the past, and they will not forget our support today.

If we merge with the United Netherlands, we will increase in military power and economic strength. We must however also help to rescue our ally France from their current disastrous war with Spain. With the theft of the remainder of the French treasury by their former President, they need all the help they can get. While France exists, our southern border can be secured.
