#8.0 - Erepublik For New Guys - The Beginning, Economy, and Military

The Beginning

You awake in the dead of night, wondering "what's next?"
Well, you have the same problem almost every single on of us has had at some point of our eLives. We sign in to the Erepublik concept of "A New World", yet more and more we ask ourselves if it's really all that new. We still have class differences all over the world, somewhat of an elitest concept working in most established countries, and the debate on what type and setup for Government (not to mention who they elected officials should be) still going on.

Well, I am here to say that this is different than your established world, as it opens doors you'd never see opened, and it happens faster than you think.
When you first come to Erepublik, you'll immediately find that the technical advances arent quite there yet.
You can find a job, just like normal, you can vote (which most of us cannot do as of yet, so that may or may not be a new experience for some), and you can train for your nations military.
Probably the most powerful tool you're given as a brand new player is that you have a way to express yourself to everyone in your own country, which is your newspaper. From almost your first article, you're going to get to know people, and they will make their opinion of you very quickly. If you write a well researched and thought out article on something, say economics or political structure or simply your own Erepublik experience, nine times out of ten you're going to make friends immediately. If you do that, I would bet that most of the major leaders in your own country will make an effort to get to know you.

But the downside is that if you do not write a well thought out article, or do not have decent writing skills you're probably not going to make many friends. So, you may ask, what do you do if you do not or cannot become the best writer in the world automatically?

Well, here's a short rundown of how to advance yourself:

Economics 101

Alright, without getting into the Free Market vs Controlled Economy argument that we've all seen since Day 1 from Erepublik, there are many ways you can advance yourself economically in Erepublik. When you first start out, you'll have 1 skill in all industries, and only your new citizens fee. Therefore, owning a company right away or having tons of money to play the market with isnt going to happen.

I'd recommend first getting a job in an industry that is always hiring, such as food, weapons, or housing.
There's always demand in those areas, so you'll never be out of work. Those industries usually pay very well to boot, so you should boost your income.

In most countries, the lowest wage people offer is normally at least 2 times your skill, but varies from country to country depending on the overall strength of their currency. You're pay will start low, but once you reach a skill level of 3 (if you work that long), your options really begin to open up. Then you can really ask for a substantive raise, and once the top companies start to bid on you, you can really make some good money.

After you find a job, I'd recommend trying to use your invites for your friends. It's always nice to have friends, and they will pay you 5 Gold per, so it's a good way to make quick dough. You can also play a little on the money market, to try and make money there. I warn that you shouldnt play with money you can't afford to lose. Exchange rates change fairly often depending on demand for that currency, so the demand might drop and you might lose money.

Once you have either worked long enough to do so, or invited enough people (or found a group of friends willing to loan you the money/invest), you have the option to start your own company. I would warn to do your research, and really look for an opening in the market. Going into an oversaturated market as a new citizen with little capital can spell trouble quickly. The only people that can employ this tactic are people with lots of capital available to them, to sustain losses while pushing others out (which is rather unethical, but happens).

Owning a company can be time consuming, but rewarding at the same time. It helps you establish a good relationship with your employees, and can establish you in the community or country of your choice. Economic prosperity is also nice as well, but is a long and hard process in which it takes more work to properly manage than it does to work in Erepublik.

The other side to owning a company is knowing your exchange rates (to know how much to sell at in terms of gold, which will help your knowledge of exporting as well), and knowing how much you can sell X product for in any country you choose. As I said, economic prosperity opens doors you'd never think of if it happens, but can spell doom if you're not prepared for it.

The other thing that economics allow is for growth. You'd be amazed at how many people travel the globe looking for success in the business world. Not many people out there want to work for someone else their entire life, no matter if it's more productive or not. There are some that do, for the simple fact that those people can make their own small daily fortune by doing so, but most of us want more.

Which normally means going outside of our National borders.....

Military 101

Now, on to the military section. The first step is to begin training. No matter if you plan on fighting in war or not, it doesn't do anyone any good to not train. You aren't required to use it, and fight on your own will, so there's no point to not training on a daily basis.

Outside of that, you can join your own country's military, or simply travel place to place and fight for fun.
We all know that war will happen in Erepublik. Our economies thrive on it. Rather, they depend on it. Whether we believe in war or not, economic success for every country is simply not sustainable without an increase in demand. Weapons, without war, become completely unnecessary, and gifts lose some of their value as well.

You'll simply keep stockpiling, and every country will simply print more money to sustain companies that hold stock they'll never use. In other words, what we're doing is pointless without war.

But, you need to be properly stocked up.

A Soldier, a decent strength soldier can do quite a bit of damage with a decent employer (normally a country) that pays in gold, Q4 weapons, and being smart. You can also make a good deal of Gold that way.

Joining your nation's military can also lead to success, but in a political realm. You can join the military, and through active and positive duty achieve high ranks within your National Military System. That can and will garner you attention, and there will be quite a few who respect how your success was built. I usually relate to doing things the old fashioned way in that sense.

Which transitions me nicely into the Political side of things here in Erepublik.....

Politics 101 to be continued with the next edition of Inter-Pol.....
