History
"The compound word ekename, literally meaning "additional name", was attested as late as 1303. This word was derived from the Old English phrase eaca "an increase", related to eacian "to increase&quot😉. By the 15th Century, the misdivision of the syllables of the phrase "an ekename" led to its corruption into the form "a nekename." Though spelling has changed, the pronunciation and meaning of the word have remained relatively stable ever since."

Web 2.0 and its Consequences
Since the arrival of Web 2.0 and the numerous social networks that came with it people hardly use nicknames anymore. "Look me up on facebook" is a common saying and the good old 90's with ICQ, IRC and Chatboxes are over.

Myself, I appreciate a well thought nickname with a long and interesting story behind it and never use my real name on the internet or in my non-formal e-mail address.

So what does the title have to do with this article? Noth... EVERYTING! How big is the deal behind your nickname?

(I know, it's a little farfetch'd, but I got you in here, didn't I?)

What's your story?
Those who don't use a nickname can explain how much they like cookies.
