Finland Under Goon Threat

Because of a threat of a Political Take Over, May 2009 presidential elections were held in forums as a precaution. Supported by Sininen Puolue, Pippelipojat and Liberaali Edistyspuolue, Engram defeated the opposing Suomen Sosialistinen Puolue candidate Jumala by votes 245-51.

After Sweden attacked Germany because of the hatred and accusations running wild between the two countries, Finland took the stance of supporting Sweden's actions, just like many other ATLANTIS countries did. In May, Finland took part in USA-Ireland war games, and arranged their own war games with Sweden and Norway, in which Nord-Norge was returned to Norway via Finland. Finland still however held Moscow and Leningrad Oblast in her possession.

The war between Romania and Indonesia reached its climax, when it was found out that some PEACE member countries exploited ”a feature” in the game which allowed the infinite duplication of money and items. Last time this had happened in January, and because of this the leadership of ATLANTIS declared it will not continue to defend non-original Romanian regions. The military alliance to which Finland belonged to began to crack, and even in Finland there was discussion about what ATLANTIS has to offer. Finland had been a faithful member of ATLANTIS since it joined, and Finns had many times said that if ATLANTIS falls, Finland goes down with it. Finally ATLANTIS was disbanded on May 21st 2009, though Finland and the countries that made up ATLANTIS continued to exist.

Congress elections of May caused wide-spread panic in Finnish population, as it looked like Finland faced a real goon threat this time - a Hungarian goon managed to take over Suomen Sosialistinen Puolue on Party President elections, and he renamed the party to Finno-Ugric Party. SSP's members joined Red Jihad until they got their party back. The PTO Party gained over 100 members on election day eve, which made Finns shiver, but a PTO attempt by Victor Petrescu on Indonesia caused PEACE to send their voters there instead of Finland. Apparently this was the reason that made Hungarians abandon Finland, or then their aim was simply to intimidate Finland, to demonstrate that they did not approve Finnish actions, nor they liked that Finland still occupied Russian regions. In any case, only one hostile foreign candidate was elected to congress.

As the nation prepared for new presidential elections, something unexpected happened. Ganjawarrior, a Finnish congressman proposed an impeach just before elections. Normally this wouldn't have mattered, but now that there was a considerable risk of PTO, and the impeachment vote can be started only every seven days, this caused a chance for possible goon president to stay in office for four days. Disciplinary action was taken against Ganjawarrior and Finland waited for the election day with fearful eyes.

Finland expands into Latvia

Despite the initial goon threat in June 2009, Jorma Ollila of Liberaali Edistyspuolue turned out to be the only running presidential candidate. The Hungarian candidate from Finno-Ugric Party with his one hundred supporters was still in the country, but he withdrew his candidacy just half an hour before elections. This, of course had its reason.

Something historical was about to happen, and citizens were filled with excitement. Finland had been threatened constantly with political take over because Finland held Leningrad Oblast and Moscow in her possession. Finland also had gained a high grain region by occupying Moscow, but no one dared to set up companies there as it was clear that the region would some day be returned to Russia. To compensate the loss of the region, an alternate plan to gain a high RM region was devised. A plan to invade Latvia via Moscow had been drafted already during Engram's term, but Jorma Ollila got the honour of executing it.

The plan hit two birds with one stone - Finland had made a secret agreement in negotiations with PEACE, according to which Finland would declare war to Latvia, advance via Latgale to Zemgale, return Russian regions to Russia and the PEACE presidential candidate in Finland would withdraw. After debating the plan the congress approved it, and war preparations were made. Yet again Finland was betrayed by one of their own however, as Democrat (a.k.a Jumala), a left-wing spokesman leaked the war plan presented to congress in media. Latvians became mad when they heard about it, and signed MPPs with Estonia and some other countries like China and the UK. Democrat was punished for treason, but the plan was executed regardless of the leak.

According to plan, Leningrad Oblast was returned to Russia, and on 8th June the war declaration to Latvia passed. The attack on Latgale began on the same day. Latvians tried to interfere by starting a RW in Moscow, and Finland had to concentrate all their forces to win the fight for Latgale. Moscow was however lost, even though PEACE committed not to fight there as stated in the contract (which they did). On 10th of June, Finland attacked Zemgale, and conquered it with the help of her allies.

All in all, the campaign in Latvia cost much, but the operation was seen as a success. A Q5 hospital was placed in Zemgale, and citizens were given free moving tickets to settle in Zemgale. Entrepreneurs were also encouraged to set up companies there.

The Latvian reaction

The attack caused Latvians to release a shitstorm on Finns. Latvians accused Finns of being imperialistic pig-dogs and cursed Finnish grandparents and their children to hell. The Finnish government tried to negotiate and use reason in vain, and constant trolling ensued in the media.

A massive Latvian baby boom began in July. It was quickly noted in Finland, but it was mostly considered systematical multi-accounting based on discussions read on Latvian forums. Latvians demanded Latgale to be returned immediately, saying that Finland promised to return the region after it had reached Zemgale. Finns did not however see any reason to return the region because Latvians had refused to negotiate with Finns in any manner.

The war in Latvia made Jorma Ollila's presidential term one of the most memorable ones in Finnish history, and with it Finland finally gained a high RM region it had sought for so long. During June the administrative system in Finland was also improved - a committee was founded inside the congress to handle sensitive issues. The committee consisted of one representative from each of the top five parties, all elected by the parties themselves. Also a programme to grant ministries apprentices was started. Recruiting new players into the game was made more systematical by assigning a work group to it.
