Goodbye, Singapore

Day 976, 09:51 Published in Singapore Singapore by Charles Martel

I'm leaving Singapore for good. I haven't decided where to go yet. I've started writing this article several times, but always decided that I'd just wait one more election before deciding to leave. Eventually I decided that when I lost a congress election, I would leave the country. At one point, I wanted to leave enough that I actually wrote an article saying not to elect me (to no avail).

A few days ago, I got a message that I would not be permitted to run for re-election. Why? because 3 other people said they wanted to run before me. Apparently election to congress is now on a "first come, first served" basis. Also, the NGP is getting 3 seats, the SRP is getting 3 seats, and the various smaller parties, that make up about 1/4 of the party membership are supposed to get 40% of the seats. In reality, they will not be able to win those seats.

I'm not going to say that making an official list of candidates is dictatorial and unfair. I'm not going to run for congress in protest. I can tell when my old connections are all gone or dead, and the new powers are just bringing their friends in (I've been traveling for the last 2 months, and haven't had a chance to go on the IRC or forums much). My last home, Estonia, wouldn't let me run as an incumbent congressman because they only wanted native Estonians in congress. They drove out all of the English-speakers. Singapore is such a small country that it took a while before people wanted to kick the old players out to make room for the new ones.

I guess I'm joining the ranks of the old, high-level eSingaporeans spread throughout the world. I'll come back to stop PTOs when asked, and sell raw materials to Singaporeans who need them.

Thanks to everyone who helped me in eSingapore since I arrived a year ago!

Special thanks to the Singaporeans,
