Empire or Peace?

Day 1,280, 11:30 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Sir Humphrey Appleby

Good evening eUK and allies alike,

As some of you already know, there have been numerous discussions taking place on the eUK forums over whether to continue our war with Ireland.

Both sides of the argument have some very good points in them, and as Congressional elections are coming up just around the corner, it would be good for you to scrutinize your candidate MPs on their view on the Irish war, as they will no doubt be voting on it if elected!

The case for continuing the war with Ireland

One of the greatest advantages the eUK gets from this war is the Natural Enemy bonus, which is providing our entire nation with a useful bonus to strength and ranking up. Additionally, our conquests in Louth mean that at some point in the campaign, we will achieve greater productivity for our economy.

Ireland has had to call several EDEN nations to help them attack the eUK, including Greece, the USA, Canada and Croatia. They have also been getting help from Poland as well. Currently, the war is equal with the eUK and we have been sending some of our damage helping our allies abroad – helping our friends defeat the EDEN nations helping Ireland, and ultimately securing good allied help for the future.

Ireland/Canada would not want to hold eUK regions for very long, as an all-out invasion would leave ONE to claim a free bridge to the Americas. Given the fact that a sheer majority of eUKers are based in London, we do not have to worry too much about losing regions if it means Ireland will be on the back foot in the long term.

The case for closing the war in Ireland

One of the main attractions of this view is that a war could still be held for the bonuses it’d give; however it would be an organised war between the Irish and UK Governments. Arguably less fun, but nonetheless gives the same bonuses. In this agreement could come potential region swapping deals, most noticeably for the Irish possession of fruit. The eUK has many regions with the same resources, so to rent one out to the Irish in return would be fairly reasonable.

In terms of international relations, we would lose some support from our friends still in Terra, as well as perhaps being seen as a ONE satellite state. One of the fundamental points of the last two Congresses were that the eUK was to remain neutral, and ceasing hostilities with the Irish would perhaps repair our image of neutrality.

The other argument is that the eUK is running out of tanks to realistically win battles. Sure, we may be doing marvellous work abroad and still, to an extent, holding our own in the war – however the logical outcome of what will happen when our tanks inevitably stop funding our defence is that things will certainly not be in our favour for a while. In the worst case scenario we would be forced to turn to our allies for help.

Unfortunately for the moderates, this rather pressing issue seems quite polarised at the moment. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts below.

Nice to see more of you fighting in the recent battles, keep it up!

Sir Humphrey Appleby MP DSO MID MBE
Speaker of the House of Commons
