A short introduction: by suggestion of Kogarashi Hazuki, I've begun writing these informational and advisorial lessons to teach Japan about eRep economics. This first set of three (releasing them over the next few days) covers the basics that many of you already know; future lesson sets will delve into more advanced concepts, although I'm writing pretty slowly. Readers should not hesitate to make critique or ask questions.

This lesson is intended for any person new to eRep, written at the very bottom level. This lesson does not offer anything in the way of advice; it merely introduces all of the economic general knowledge so that the following lessons can be better understood.

MONEY

GOLD is the fundamental form of money. It is used to create and upgrade companies, to make parties, to form alliances or make wars, et cetera. And in all of these cases, the GOLD disappears in that action. Likewise, GOLD is created during such events as earning a medal or levelling very high. Of course it can also be used in player-to-player transactions, such as the sale of a company or a simple donation.

The groundwork of each country's economy is its local currency, generally worth somewhere in the range of 0.005 and 0.050 GOLD. The Japanese yen, JPY, is currently valued at about 0.014 GOLD. By accessing the Monetary Market, one can exchange between any one currency and another or GOLD through immediate trade with other players.

COMPANIES

The companies are where the actual action of the economy takes place. General Managers (GMs) offer out jobs at different levels of pay for different levels of skill. Employees who take up these jobs can work once daily, earning salaries for themselves and contributing productivity for their companies. This productivity is calculated through a complex equation considering factors such as wellness, company size, and product quality. The productivity adds up to create the actual products, which the GMs can then place on sale.

(Note: An employee of a company can work from anywhere within the same country.)

Companies are split into three classes of industries. Raw Materials (RMs) are created out of pure productivity, but their production depends on the natural resources of the region it is in. RM industries include Wood, Grain, Diamonds, Iron, and Oil.

By comparison, Construction and Manufacturing must use both productivity and purchased Raw Mats to create their products. Construction is primarily of Housing, but also includes Hospitals and Defense Systems; all three use Wood as their RM. Manufacturing includes Food (corresponding to Grain), Gifts (Diamonds), Weapons (Iron), and Moving Tickets (Oil).

PRODUCTS

Summary of the finished products:

Food - Eaten (automatically) once daily to increase wellness. Higher qualities give more wellness.

Gifts - Can be given to other citizens to increase wellness by the quality value. (Q2 gift means +2 wellness.) A citizen can receive only 10 wellness from gifts daily.

Weapons - Used to multiply the force of an individual fight in war. Higher qualities increase the force further.

Moving Tickets - Allow one move to any location in the game, at the change residence button in profile. Low qualities use up a bit of wellness whereas high qualities increase wellness.

Housing - Can be used permanently to increase wellness daily, much like Food.

Unlike the other products, Hospital and Defense System (DS) products are purchased by the government and permanently placed in a region. Take note that a hospital company is not the same as a hospital product. Hospitals are used for wellness increases after fighting in war, and Defense Systems increase the total force points necessary to win a battle. (These products may be covered more extensively in later lessons.)

MARKETPLACE

The Marketplace is simply the sales place of products. GMs can place them on sale, specifying exact quantity and price, within their own country or abroad. Citizens in that country can then access the marketplace to purchase as many as they like.

Privately, citizens can trade products and cash through donations, although it relies on personal trust to fulfill an agreement. Also, donation of large amounts of items (often Raw Mats) can be very slow.
