Countries Most Likely to Experience a Baby Boom

Day 889, 11:05 Published in USA USA by Gnaeus Progenitor
Baby booms. Every eNation wants one, only a few have them. They seem to happen randomly. A post on the right forum, the media picks up on the game, a big advertising campaign on the right sites - a baby boom can occur. However, what else is behind that lovely explosion in ePopulation numbers?

http://img109.imageshack.us/i/society.jpg/">http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/3965/society.jpg" />

Baby Booms, of course, refer to a huge upsurge in the population of a country by newer players. There are also illegitimate baby booms which occur - these are due to bots and people administering multiple accounts. These types of player booms also occur frequently [arguably, the most frequent for of a boom].

*Please read the following section before commenting*
How did I decide the list? There are several factors I took into account. No, it was not super scientific. This not concrete stuff - as the art of prediction tends to be. I based my ranking on the following dimensions [similar to how the Daily Beast does their rankings; shhh, don't tell them I borrowed it]:
- Internet access / usage [1 being few internet users in the country, 5 being a **** load (scientific term)]
- Boredom [1 being very little overall boredom, 5 being a small town in northern Sweden - in the winter]
- In-game Infrastructure [1 being few hospitals and helpful organizations, 5 being many]
- Bot / Cheating / Multi-ing Ability [1 being low cheating probability, 5 being Russia]
- Other factors: Geography, Urban Density, Weather, gap between rich & poor, population, HDI ranking [Human Development Index, made by the UN], Culture, and sexiness. I also list which Alliance the eNation is in or leans towards.

*Note: sexiness is an arbitrary number which refers to the appeal of the in-game culture over the past months. It on a scale from 1 - 9000 [1= not sexeh, 9000 = vereh sexeh]

As mentioned before this is mostly guessing and making passing assumptions as well as noticing patterns in past baby booms. Keep in mind this list was written by a bored American guy - it's going to be oh so very biased.

Top ten Countries most likely to experience a baby boom [legitimate or not]:

10. The United Kingdom
http://img708.imageshack.us/i/britishempiresmiley.jpg/">http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/2639/britishempiresmiley.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 4
Boredom: 2
In-game infrastructure: 2
Cheating Index: 2.5
HDI Ranking: 21
Game Citizen Population: 7,719
Real Life Population: 61,113,205 [est.]
Affiliation: Phoenix, Anglican
Climate: Dreary
Sexiness: 500/9000

Renown for their bad teeth, weather, and food the world over - the Brits seem to get a bad reputation. However, everyone in this country apparently DOES NOT live in London. With a sprawling suburban population and a climate which inclines people to stay in doors - they could easily turn to a computer and the internet for an escape. The country in the game, though, lost much of it's infrastructure from the American / EDEN invasion; this means they may not be able to cope with a huge influx of new people. From the bored Scottish sheep herder in the highlands - to the bored chum chilling in the burbs of Portsmouth - many may flock to this game, as Woldy might put it, rather sharpish.

9. The United States of America
http://img717.imageshack.us/i/americay.jpg/">http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2826/americay.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 4.5
Boredom: 2
In-game infrastructure: 2
Cheating Index: 2.8
HDI Ranking: 13
Game Citizen Population: 24,220
Real Life Population: 307,212,123 [est.]
Affiliation: Brolliance, EDEN, Varies
Climate: Varies
Sexiness: 2010/9000

The U.S.A. - a country so passionately stubborn that one more hospital would CERTAINLY threaten the fortress strategy - as well as doom all eAmericans. Fat, lazy, and stupid - those are the stereotypes which we have to overcome as citizens of the eU.S.A. The infrastructure situation is abysmal - 3 states have hospitals leading many to wonder if the country could quickly cope with a large group of new players. However, the numerous programs out there helping new citizens do such a good job to make up for it - the Flying Unicorn Squadron, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and others do so much to help keep players as well as funnel them to our fortress regions. Weather for the U.S. in real life can really bite depending on where you are, especially in the winter. The game can also be a retreat from the oppressive heat in the summertime.

8. Czech Republic
http://img684.imageshack.us/i/silverlionofbohemia.jpg/">http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/529/silverlionofbohemia.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 3
Boredom: 3.5
In-game infrastructure: 2.5
Cheating Index: 2
HDI Ranking: 36
Game Citizen Population: 480
Real Life Population: 10,211,904 [est.]
Affilation: Poland
Climate: Cold winters, pleasant summers
Sexiness: 501/9000

This baby boom will likely not be huge - but it would be possible for the Czech Republic to get a few thousand active members. It fits in with the classic baby boom countries which tended to be in Eastern Europe. Prague is the most happenin' city in all of the republic - and the boredom level runs high everywhere else in the country. The Czechs have the awesome reputation of drinking more beer per capita than any other nation - meaning they might be a bit disorganized in the initial stages of the boom. The harsh winters and mountainous terrain make that season a stay indoors season. Watch out Poland, Czech behind you.

7. Estonia
http://img26.imageshack.us/i/estonia2.jpg/">http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8914/estonia2.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 3
Boredom: 3.5
In-game infrastructure: 4
Cheating Index: 3
HDI Ranking: 40
Game Citizen Population: 2,211
Real Life Population: 1,299,371 [est.]
Affilation: Phoenix, Russia
Climate: It's a Baltic State, what do you think?
Sexiness: 501/9000

"I can't find it on my map." Estonia - once dominated by Teutonic Knights and then later faced the ire of the Soviet Union. This country has evolved to become a vibrant post Cold War nation. Its population is smaller than the Czech republic - with about 1.3 million people, a lot of them would have to be addicted to the game in order to truly gain some numbers [or they could just multi their way to victory]. So again, we're looking a smaller baby boom but one which could have an impact on the game.

6. Brazil
http://img90.imageshack.us/i/brazilwoah.jpg/">http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/3742/brazilwoah.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 3
Boredom: 2
In-game infrastructure: 5
Cheating Index: 4
HDI Ranking: 75
Game Citizen Population: 20,274
Real Life Population: 198,739,269 [est.]
Affilation: Phoenix
Climate: HOT, WET, SEXY
Sexiness: 5000/9000

Sexy, sexy Brazil. Why would ANYONE from Brazil play this game? Beautiful beaches, warm weather, and parties everyday - right? Well, if you are upper middle class or wealthy in Brazil leaving your house requires your bodyguard, police bribe money, and for your armored car to be waxed. The risk of getting mugged in the streets might be enough for many young Brazilians to simply crack a window for their "outside time". Joking aside, this developing country has seen huge expansions in way of urbanization and internet access. The new middle class of Brazil is discovering the online world as suburbs have sprouted in their enormous metropolitan areas to house their humongous population.

5. Argentina
http://img171.imageshack.us/i/buenosaires.jpg/">http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2203/buenosaires.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 3.5
Boredom: 3
In-game infrastructure: 4.5
Cheating Index: 3
HDI Ranking: 49
Game Citizen Population: 8,506
Real Life Population: 40,913,584 [est.]
Affilation: Phoenix
Climate: Very Nice. Stay away from Patagonia.
Sexiness: 1066/9000

The country with the highest real life GDP in Latin America may prove to be the country with the most potential for eGrowth. This nation has an urban population which is sprawled out - much of it is concentrated around the capital, Buenos Aires. The country has expanded a lot in its internet usage and is one of the most "developed" country in Latin America, according to the HDI. A big baby boom is possible from this country of 40 million [slightly more than Poland's population]. Don't cry for Argentina.

4. Russia
http://img185.imageshack.us/i/putinworld.jpg/">http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/2176/putinworld.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 3.5
Boredom: 4
In-game infrastructure: 5
Cheating Index: 5
HDI Ranking: 71
Game Citizen Population: 22,973
Real Life Population: 140,041,247 [est.]
Affilation: Phoenix
Climate: HOLY MOTHER OF COLD
Sexiness: 32/9000

In Russia, Erepublik plays you! Russia is perfect for this game. A disgruntled population who hates good portions of the world and believes in a strong nation. Also, it helps that it is so cold there that one has to huddle by one's computer for the warm air blowing off the outdated processor. On a more serious note, Putin's government, in real life, expanded computer and internet availability. Russian players have finally found a game where they can live out their dreams of world conquest! Gulags sold separately.

3. South Korea
http://img265.imageshack.us/i/hawtness.jpg/">http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/6822/hawtness.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 4
Boredom: 2.5
In-game infrastructure: 2
Cheating Index: 2 [it would be 4 if they ever got a boom]
HDI Ranking: 26
Game Citizen Population: 530
Real Life Population: 48,508,972 [est.]
Affilation: Neutral, Boa Kwon, WoW
Climate: Temperate - but the winters can be a pain.
Sexiness: 476/9000

We better hope that the youth of South Korea continues to play World of Warcraft and StarCraft - otherwise, we would all be living in South Korea. The current eCountry of South Korea appears to be just one big demilitarized zone. It's about as exciting as getting a grapefruit for your birthday - which isn't exciting unless you're a pirate suffering from Scurvy. There is potential for the eCountry to have a large baby boom - if they stop playing other [more fun?] games.

2. China
http://img249.imageshack.us/i/greatwallofchina.jpg/">http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/7797/greatwallofchina.jpg" />
[with a large population, comes a great wall]

Internet access / usage score: 2.5
Boredom: 3
In-game infrastructure: 2
Cheating Index: 3
HDI Ranking: 92
Game Citizen Population: 11,281
Real Life Population: 1,338,612,968 [est.]
Affilation: SOL, Brolliance, EDEN
Climate: Diverse, but mostly very pleasant.
Sexiness: 808/9000

This country has the world's largest human population, however, limitations to internet access as well as government restrictions mean that China has been inhibited from becoming the world power in the game that it could be. The population in China still trends rural - many don't even have electricity, yet. The country is developing, and has the lowest position on the Human Development Index of any nation on this list. Though, the future for this country is bright. Many current and future players from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Shanghai likely could contribute to the growing citizen count in the game. Hong Kong / Macau [Special Administrative Region] and Taiwan are less restrictive when it comes to using the internet. Hong Kong is at 24 on the HDI and Taiwan would be ranked similarly [not ranked this year] - these areas provide much promise for the eChina of tomorrow.

1. Canada
http://img8.imageshack.us/i/canadalights.jpg/">http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/4441/canadalights.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 5
Boredom: 2
In-game infrastructure: 3.5
Cheating Index: 2
HDI Ranking: 4
Game Citizen Population: 6,072
Real Life Population: 33,487,208 [est.]
Affilation: Brolliance, EDEN, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Maple Syrup
Climate: COLD enough to freeze the balls off of a pool table 😉
Sexiness: 4500/9000

Yes, Canada. This place is all suburbs and small towns densely packed together for warmth, as well as protection from Polar Bears. Yes, there is plenty to do in Canada, like skating aboot on the ice or hanging oot with friends - but in the middle of the miserable winters there is so much time to do things that Erepublik could be worked in. The fact that Canada has such a high internet usage rate [reputed to be the highest in the world] also puts it in the top spot. Additionally, with high literacy rates as well as a good education system, our Canadian overlords will hopefully be very wise.

Honorable mentions:

India
http://img408.imageshack.us/i/tajmahalv.jpg/">http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9478/tajmahalv.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 1
Boredom: 3
In-game infrastructure: 2
Cheating Index: 2
HDI Ranking: 134
Game Citizen Population: 1,481
Real Life Population: 1,156,897,766 [est.]
Affilation: Brolliance, EDEN, USA
Climate: It's HOT. And don't get me started on Monsoon Season.
Sexiness: 501/9000

Though India is projected to surpass China in real life population in the near future, it may be awhile before it does so on Erepublik. The current largest real life democracy on Earth is still an up and coming nation. Development is rapid in the country of over a billion people, but it isn't fast enough to see internet usage and leisure time increase to a point which brings a great many users to Erepublik.

France
http://img695.imageshack.us/i/francemarianne.gif/">http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5776/francemarianne.gif" />

Internet access / usage score: 4
Boredom: 2
In-game infrastructure: 1
Cheating Index: 2
HDI Ranking: 8
Game Citizen Population: 8,257
Real Life Population: 64,057,792 [est.]
Affilation: Entente, Phoenix, La Peuple
Climate: Depends on where you are. C'est la vie.
Sexiness: 1558/9000

Bonjour! Comment-allez vous? Oui, oui. Hoh hoh hohn [French nasal noise - hard to write out as onomatopoeia]. France was barely on the map not too long ago. Now the country is almost fully back. The French players may be harder to come by than expected due to real life demands of the people. Schooling in France for teenagers and university students tends to be fairly intense - which may live little room for leisure time. Though, France might have an untapped market for this game in older players - people just out of college. There is still hope that the formerly oppressed eNation will become a major power.

Sweden
http://img90.imageshack.us/i/swedishknockers.jpg/">http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/6482/swedishknockers.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 4
Boredom: 2
In-game infrastructure: 4
Cheating Index: 2
HDI Ranking: 7
Game Citizen Population: 5,844
Real Life Population: 9,059,651 [est.]
Affilation: EDEN, Sausages
Climate: Snow & ice - stick to the Saunas.
Sexiness: 737/9000

Sweden, as well all know, is cold and curses the world with catchy pop tunes. The Swedes have harsh winters and internet access - as we have seen, this increases the likelihood that a country will, in desperation, turn to this game for enjoyment. Along with this, the Swedish also have glory days to relive - and by this I mean their prominence in the 30 Years' War, which occurred in the 17th century - this is the root of their lust for expansion. Sweden, though many call it pig disgusting for some obscure reason, assists as a crucial counterbalance to Russia and is a prominent member of EDEN.

Japan
http://img121.imageshack.us/i/hellokittytoaster.jpg/">http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/2521/hellokittytoaster.jpg" />

Internet access / usage score: 4
Boredom: 1
In-game infrastructure: 2
Cheating Index: 2
HDI Ranking: 10
Game Citizen Population: 1,803
Real Life Population: 127, 078, 679 [est.]
Affilation: Chaotic Neutral, Brolliance-ish
Climate: Forget the climate. They have Earthquakes. Lots of Earthquakes.
Sexiness: 3000/9000

Japan is not a very good candidate for a baby boom. The country is known for having a rigorous education system which demands a lot of time from the students. Let's also not forget that Japan is one of the centers of video, computer, and all around gaming. The people of Japan have access to so many varieties of games - Erepublik is likely lost in the fray. Not to mention the fact that the densely urban nation has so much to offer as far as other forms of entertainment and social participation. There is a chance, though, that this game could somehow become a hit there [no predicting Japan, they came up with Pokémon].

Analysis:

Climate obviously factored in a great deal in my choices. Cold climates tend to send people inside - and thus leaving them with only a limited number of things to do. More importantly, beautiful climates, like those found in areas around Mediterranean, tend to keep people out doors and away from computer/online games.

Urban density is a big player, too. Think about where you live. Is it in the suburbs? How far do you have to drive to go to the nearest restaurant? To the nearest bar? Club? You get my drift. I live in a small college town [because I am a student]. This town is about an hour and a half away from any city of any decent size. So playing this game can often be a result of access to activity. Even though the U.S. has a high urban density, many of our players come from small towns and rural areas.

A large number of players are students - both high school and college students. The reason why this is important to note, is because education in places like Germany, France, Japan, and elsewhere, is often so rigorous that it will take away time that they would spend on this game, or time that they would have spent finding out about this game. Also, if there isn't a culture of gaming or having a lot of free time - that can prohibit participation in even the most developed country. And it is often the most developed countries with the most access to things to do with their time.

With this said - if you really don't do much in the game - it takes almost no effort to play. This is a game which could easily be picked up by someone who already games a lot - or who rarely plays things like this. So really any country could have a boom at any moment. Think about that!
