Congress - The Kingmakers

Day 1,784, 11:31 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Blue And Evil

Another month, another government, and I find myself in the cushy and well-paid position of Minister of Legislative affairs. Many people might find themselves thinking ‘Minister of Huwha?’, so I thought I take this opportunity to explain about my role, and the role of both branches of the eUK’s government.

The eRepublik system of Government is a little different to that of the UK in the real world, the main difference being eRep’s system of a separately elected Country President, instead of a Prime Minister coming from what would be the in-game Congress election. Whilst both the CP and Congress work through the same system in game of proposing and voting on laws, there’s differences on the laws each can propose.

I won’t go into detail about who can do what, since you can find all that on the country administration page of the eRepublik wiki.

So, if there are two branches of government - The President and Congress - which one is in charge? Surely it’s the President - when negotiations between countries happen, it’s between Presidents. Presidents can declare war, propose peace and negotiate alliances, so he’s in charge, right?

Wrong.

There is nothing that a President can do without Congress approval. Most of the changes a President makes have to go through a Congress vote, and those that don’t (eg changing how the national military is run) require a President to consult and discuss with the Congress. If he doesn’t, he’d be looking at an Impeachment coming his way.

The President doesn’t run the country, Congress does. It’s the President’s job to find options and proposals for Congress to consider and enact. And that’s where I come in. The Minister of Legislative Affairs’ role is to act as a bridge between the President and Congress, to help the President present the options to Congress - and by far the easiest way to do so is on the forums.

All major decisions and events get debated on the eUK forums. There are two areas for this - a Public Discussion area where everyone can discuss events, and a Sensitive Issues area which is private for Congress and the President. Regardless of if you’re a Congress member, or an everyday member of the public, if you have an opinion, the forums are the place where people listen - so if you haven’t done so yet, sign up now, and introduce yourself.

Of course, the forums aren’t for everyone, so whenever there’s a new topic to be discussed, I’ll be messaging every Congress member in-game to make sure they’re kept abreast of the latest developments, but let me make things clear: It’s a damn site easier to discuss things on a forum than through in game messages.

If anyone has any other questions to ask about how the Government works, or how you can get involved (Which is always fun) start asking them, someone is sure to hear you. Failing that, ask me, it’s what I’m there for 🙂
