Community Debate: A Home for the Lords

Day 670, 17:17 Published in Australia Australia by Listhp Tomptos

This week we will go overseas again but this time to the eUK. At the moment debate is raging in eUK about what should happen with their House of Lords. The country is divided with half wanting to end its presence in UK politics and another half wanting it as a permanent fixture.

Firstly I will give you an outline of the House of Lords and it's purpose. The House of Lords was created as a home for experienced politicians so as they can still take part in politics but do not have the voting power that a member of the House of Commons receives. They just check bills and provide constructive criticism and occasionally propose their own legislation. To become a member you must apply while not a member of HoC, the Party Presidents of the top 5 parties and the President must then approve your entry. The applicants have almost always been in HoC for at least 6 months and many have never lost an election, they also have ex-Prime Ministers in their ranks. There have been many attempts to remove it before but all have failed because almost all Lords are respected members of the community.

At the moment there is a move to destroy it because it is seen as elitist and a way of sticking in the past. Others argue that it helps preserve balance and helps new players into the game by removing competition from older players that are almost certain to win.

So the two questions are:
1. Should eUK keep the HoL or is it an old elitist part of their political system that needs to be removed?

2. Would you support a parliamentary system similar to what is currently being used in eUK being introduced into Australia so as older players leave to a different section of parliament once they have been accepted by certain officials and important members of the political process?
