Canada has a new constitution

It appears we have a new constitution.

On March 18, the speaker opened a thread and poste😛

As Congress has approved (http://ecanada.cc/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=12340) the proposed new constitution: (http://ecanada.cc/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=12171) we now enter the final stage of the process. Party Presidents will have 5 days period (until 1:00 eRepublik time on Day 1219) to cast their vote. The Party presidents and erep admins will be instructed of the changes by myself via private message. Please vote on the new constitution party presidents.

The vote being now apparently closed, I have checked the party rankings to determine which are the “top five” and their presidents. The vote count appears to be sufficient to pass the measure into law.

As explained in a recent case, the “old” constitution said it could be amended (including repeal) if the “required” number of party presidents voted affirmatively. The Court interpreted “required” as being defined in the constitution itself as including “An affirmative vote by the President of three of the top five parties”.

Votes from “top five” - 3/5 – sufficient for approval, as follows:

angrymobman -CPP - yes
Kronos q - EPIC- no
Muglack – MDP – no vote (banned)

Yes, Kilgore put a lot of effort into this, a task that was repeatedly discussed and taken up by a long succession of eCanadians, but only he put the final capstone in place.

Now, let's all find out what this will mean in the days to come. Should be an interesting learning experience - actually looking forward to it.

We don't need a legalese-filled constitution. In fact, I doubt the need for a traditional constitution at all. We're a community of a few hundred people, about 50-70 of them active and about 30-40 of those who care about this stuff. A constitution obscures what the courts really should be doing. Instead of spending days looking for loopholes in a document, we can just apply common sense to these issues. All we need a constitution for is to outline basic procedure and principles that laws, citizens and governments shouldn't violate. I don't see how that can't be reduced to one or two pages.

dominick: agreed. Mind you this new one HAS been reduced to two pages. Cut and paste the thing into MsWord. It is two pages: Times new roman, 12 pt. font. So, now "cheating". To get it all on one page you have to reduce font to 8 and put it into two columns landscape. Will not be very legible if printed. But, on a monitor its perfectly readable.

So, maybe we are getting very much closer to your ideal. It is worth reminding us when we stray from it. As you do, and for which i thank you.

dominik: ever considered asking the court to maybe do something about this? You are a citizen. You can have someone post a simple request, publicly, in the public discussion area of the supreme court forum. That will start the process. Same response i gave to another player recently.

It's not the size of the constitution, it's how you use it!

This new version is nothing but basic procedure dictating the fundamental governance structure. It covers only the CP, congress and judiciary. Even there, it only ALLOWS for things like a cabinet, speaker and judges, it does not REQUIRE any action or position at any time. The simplification will allow for a much more flexible government and will allow for us to deal with issues based primarily on game play mechanics rather than arbitrary RL imitation.

I will be putting together a summary of the changes in the next few days. I figure who better to explain what is and is not in the new Charter than the guy who wrote it.
