But I guess the initial question was too hard.
I had never heard of Hudson Taylor before.

That hint made it to easy indeed. The Hudson is a well known river however so without the hint it should have been possible to solve it. If I might suggest so; Don't start hinting to soon. After a day or so the first one is soon enough giving people that are not looking every hour a change as well.

Oh and second hint; Don't let people simply shout answers, that makes it something like who's the best guesser, but let them explain why they think the answer is right. If not done so they don't qualify...

@Weekstrom: Hudson is the second name of the missionary. It typically is easier to search for surnames...
In the first hint "American" could refer to either North- and South-America combined or to the USA, which potentially meant lots of relevant rivers.

But indeed with some knowledge of rivers, the second hint allowed for searching for missionaries in China and gave the right answer very soon.
