APS: Party Popularity Study - Part III

Day 682, 22:29 Published in USA USA by Erik Victor

>Top 5 Party Registration
The AAP, once at the bottom of America's top five rankings, has used a massive recruiting campaign to rocket to the top over the past few months. Party President Mercurius100 has transformed the AAP into a major power player during his tenure, helping the AAP capture a party-record 36% of Congressional seats in the last election.

Tied with USWP for most seats in Congress, the AAP is now setting its sights even higher, launching a Woxan/Cerb bid for POTUS. Despite underdog odds, Woxan will clearly benefit from the AAP's tremendous membership advantage over the CVP, which has nominated incumbent Gaius Julius. If elected, Woxan would be the second AAP president elected in V1, the first being Uncle Sam.

The USWP, once the most dominent powerhouse in American politics, has fallen from grace. The party that created the liberal dynasty of former Presidents Scrabman and Harrison Richardson is now firmly in second place, and if current trends continue, the USWP may even drop to third place within 2-3 months. The USWP took a big hit when former President Harrison Richardson oversaw the July military blunders that allowed PEACE forces to conquer most of the United States. When Richardson lost to Emerick in the August 5 election, USWP membership fell into a near-freefall. Since their peak of over 2100 members (in both May and July of 2009), USWP membership has dropped 55.6%.

The Libertarian Party, which suffered its own membership problems before APS began tracking party membership, has faired decently well throughout the US-PEACE War in comparison with the USWP. They lost members consistently from early August until mid-September, but are now steadily increasing membership and slowly gaining on the USWP.

The CVP's membership remained relatively even until July 20, 2009, approximately the time when former presidential candidate Ajay Bruno caused a fissure in the CVP and created an alternate "CVP". This event is denoted by a small white square on the CVP line in the below graph. Despite Mattoze5's best efforts, the party bled members until his final days as Party President. The CVP, like the Libertarians, is beginning to see a consistent increase in membership over the past twenty days. Despite spending a brief time in the number five slot in the August doldrums, the CVP is now firmly back in fourth place.

Lastly, the UIP. The UIP has continued its reputation as number five in the Top 5 parties. It has seen very little significant fluctuation in membership in the past four months, but has recovered from nearly losing the last coveted Top 5 spot to the Federalists in late August. Membership is staying flat for now.

Top 5 Party Membership: 5/31/09 - 10/3/09
AAP: +728
USWP: -1205
Libertarian: -350
CVP: -338
UIP: -226

>Party Membership As A Percent Of Total Population
The APS has compiled statistics from four nations on the percentage of their population that is registered as a member of a Top 5 party. The four nations observed were:
    [li]United States (18😵[/li]
    [li]Russia (19😵[/li]
    [li]Indonesia (20😵[/li]
    [li]Romania (26😵[/li]

Romania, with just over a quarter of its population in a Top 5 party, had the largest percentage of it population registered in a Top 5 party among the four nations studied. The U.S., Russia, and Indonesia were all approximately the same, with approximately one-fifth or less of their respective populations belonging to a Top 5 party.

The U.S. in particular has seen a large drop in Top 5 party membership within the past four months, dropping from 5,136 on May 31 to 3,745 on October 3 - a decrease of 1,391.

Only the AAP managed to buck the trend, gaining 728 members in the same timespan (see above graph).
