Alpha Squad moves out

Day 727, 14:26 Published in Malaysia Malaysia by Thomas Thade

After the Indonesian's surprise attack into Southern Thailand, and Malaysia's timely withdrawal, Alpha Squad was once again back in the capital, recuperating from the bitter defeat, but it wasn't long before the base alarms were sounding off their insane warbling pitch again.

About 5 minutes later the men were on the tarmac in front of the barracks awaiting the briefing. As the last of the soldiers were filing out I saw the Platoon CO, Captain Jeff Shiiste, walking out of the GHQ. I jogged my way over to him and snapped off a salute.

"At ease Lieutenant"
"Where are they attacking this time, sir"
"It's not the Indonesians, it's some revolutionary force in Northern and North Eastern Thailand."
"The Thai's are rebelling, now?!"
"It's not the Thai's either. It's a foreign group, the KS Team."
"What are our orders?"
"Were to defend it as well as we can without compromising the mainland. Have the men ready to depart in half an hour, were heading to Northern Thailand.
"Yes Sir."

The initial fighting was a series of guerrilla warfare style hit and run attacks. Discipline kept the soldiers calm and we methodically fought off each wave without taking too many casualties and without losing one of the Humvee's or the APC

Soon, however, the enemy forces began to mass and assault key locations. One such location was the city of Chiang Mai. The local militia was already being overrun as were the other squads already there.

Before we could get into the town proper a number of technicals attack us from an adjacent path. They opened up on the lead Humvee, peppering it with 40 caliber rounds. Little did they know that right behind it was our APC. The gunner swiveled the turret towards the incoming enemies. The lead technical driver tried to turn and get off the road, but the 2nd one slammed into him from behind , not yet realizing the danger. The APC's 25mm cannon opened up on the two hapless enemy units turning them into mouldering wrecks. The last technical turned and disappeared around a turn.

The order from Captain Shiiste in the lead Humvee came over the com

"Lt. Thade, we can't let them give away our position. Chase them down."
"You heard him, floor it."

2nd Lt. Adzman, The driver and my 2IC, whipped the Humvee onto the road and we chased down the technical's back trail. It wasn't too hard with all the dust it was kicking up. We caught sight of them again and they immediately opened up fire. Our gunner, Zaduka, stood into the hatch and traded fire with the enemy gunner. The chase went on for awhile in a cat and mouse fashion. Zaduka finally took out the other gunner and Adzhadi sped up so Zaduka could get a hit on the driver, what happened next is hard to explain because of how fast it happened.

As we were steadily gaining on the vehicle Zaduka must have hit something vital, because it exploded without warning pitching forward end over end. Adzhadi hit the brakes and tried to avoid it, but it was already too late, and the Humvee slammed into wreckage at the worst possible angle. They told us that you couldn't flip one of the military Humvees if you tried, but they were wrong. The Humvee launched into the air giving one half turn before sliding on its roof for 70 meters or so. When I came to, I didn't really know where I was.

"Sir, Sir, are you okay?"
"What Happened Lieutenant?"
"I think I might have crashed the Humvee, think they'll demote me?"
laughing, and it hurt to laugh " No I Think your fine Adzman. Is everyone ok?"
Castello Areba one of the younger soldiers stirred "I'm ok sir, but I think Zaduka is dead"
"Shit, well, lets get the hell out of this thing before we follow suit."

The back door opened easily. It hadn't been that bad of a crash. The only reason Zaduka had died, was that he had been half out of the Humvee shooting the gun. I called the Captain on the radio

"Sir, we got the other technical, but our ride is trashed, were pretty banged up over here. We need an evac."
"Where the hell have you been? I've been trying to raise you on the radio for the past 20 minutes. Were pulling out of this area, we can't hold it any longer. What's your location?"
"We are... 2.5 clicks south-southeast the Southern rendezvous point."
"Ok, Lieutenant, you have to listen to me. Move your asses straight south as fast as possible. There is an intersection about a kilometer south of there wait in the trees near there. I'm requesting a heli evac for you right now. Pop green smoke for pick up."

" Let's go Alpha Squad, move, move! Double time!"

We ran through the forest as fast as we could. After about half a kilometer I heard a rumbling noise.

"Hold, Adzman move up on left, Areba cover our backs."
" Sir it's a tank."
"One of ours is still here?"
"I don't think so, it looks like an Indonesian unit."
"Wait, I see it now that is definitely Indo."
"What do we do, sir?"
"We wait for it to pass and try to run by as close to it as possible. The gunner isn't up so we as long as we're close we won't be seen behind it. Areba, move up."

The tank passed within a mere meter of our hiding place in the brush.

"Go, go now!"

We sprinted past the tank skirting along its backside and then diving once again into the forest. We made it the rest of the way to the intersection without event, Spotted the chopper and activated the green smoke canister and sat back waiting for our ride to pick us up. As we were leaving the area, we all looked back at the smoking scarred landscape.

"Sir, do you see that? Close to the city. Are those all tanks?"
"Yeah, I don't think this was just an insurgent force. It was an actual attack."

Author's note:

I of course took liberties with geography, not knowing the first thing about Thailand. I took liberty with terminology. Tanks here, don't mean the definition of erepublik tanks. There also aren't enough soldiers in Alpha Squad to fill up 2 Humvees and an APC. Also, I was really long winded and didn't actually write that good of a story imo. This is the work of the past hour and a half or so. I don't have time to edit it, and I don't want to wait til tomorrow to edit it to make it better. Posting this 2 days after the actual wars seems silly, posting it 3 days after is just unnecessary.

I always wanted to write one of these about a battle and if enough people like it I may follow up with another fight. I don't think I will be doing Sabah or Sarawak. Those were way to decisive to make a good story. This is the abridged version of that though.

"We went to Sabah to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and we were all outta gum."

Ditto Sarawak

Vote up for explaining why Zaduka is dead now. 🙂 and for slightly modified Duke Nukem quote.
