Imagine this conversation, if you will:
Player: Damn, eRepublik is starting to suck
Plato: F*ck you, I'm busy making it better
Player: Oh, goody, what have you got for me?
Plato: Well, you know all that stuff you REALLY LIKE?
Player: Yeah? What about it?
Plato: I'm taking that s*it out
3 months later
Player: Damn, admin is starting to suck
Plato: *sigh* FIIIINNNE. What do you want?
Player: Well, I'd like about 500 health per day.
Plato: Hmm....
3 weeks later
Plato: DONE.
Player: Oh, I can have 500 health per day?
Plato: Nope.
Player: ...
Plato: Here's what I did instead. I rewired the health system so you get a different recovery depending on where you are.
Player: But I'm in the Shinsengumi, and they distribute health packs once per day.
Plato: The Shinsengumi, eh? Hmm... F*CK THE SHINSENGUMI! MY GAME, MY RULES!
Player: Okay, please don't ban me...
Plato: No problem, I won't. Here, I almost forgot.
Player: What?
Plato: Now you regenerate health 4 times per day!
Player: Do I get to work 4 times per day?
Plato: Nope
Player: Won't that cause a food shortage?
Plato: Nope
Player: I'm pretty sure it w...

3 minutes later...
Plato: Wait a second... this will cause a food shortage! I wonder how many free food companies will solve THIS problem. To the lab!

Inb4 Sheogorath claims Plato is stealing his identity.
There is/was actually a overproduction problem in the game. So there shouldn't be a big problem with food and the rest. A lot of products got bought by the Erepublik Bots, but now that people will need more products prices will rise and bots will start to buy less seeing as prices wont go below the price level at which the bots start buying products.
But to be honest i have no clue yet how it will all work out, but it is to early to say it will lead to a food shortage.
You're probably right; well hopefully right. If in the end this turns out to stengthen the yen, I'm all for it. However, it was probably just another blunder to boost the military module, nothing more.

Lots of complaints about the "endless war" module and its effects on the game economy. Platobot was/is a disaster for a number of reasons, and the increased consumption by the new 4xhealth regen/day thing might alleviate it a little, as Ori stated above.
That said, are any but the most fanatic players going to *actually* log-in 3~4 times per day to fight? Probably mostly only those who are paying real money who are already overpowered compared to us mere mortals... further unbalancing the game.
