A World Without Want [Sci-Fi]

Day 2,502, 13:33 Published in USA USA by Stan Brown

Alright, before you start reading this (That is, if you decide to read this), let me introduce myself. I'm Stan and this paper, The Foundation Journal, was originally called "Stan's Plans" a little under 2 years ago. I've been away from eRep for quite awhile and I'm not too experienced with the political shenanigans that have been going on around here lately so I'll likely stay out of that in my editorials. Currently, this paper is purely for poetry, prose, fiction, etc. that I write and I hope that you enjoy it. Any subscriptions or likes would mean quite a lot to me so don't be afraid to leave 'em if you like the writing. Alright, without further ado, read on to the first article of The Foundation Journal.

A World Without Want

James woke up to the sound of the regional alarm going off in his mind. It was time to go play! Playtime was always James' favorite time of day, much better than meal-times or periods of relievance. Luckily, playtime was also the longest. The man got out of his slumber-pouch and wandered through his quarters before some mechanical arms extended from the ceiling and dressed him as it always did. He lifted his arms and legs as he was told, put them into the sleeves of his outfit and in seconds he was ready to go play.

Outside there were plenty of others to play with, each one being guided out on top of a transport model from a couple of weeks ago. Each one of these models was outfitted to carry, feed, soothe, and sedate their occupants. It might amaze someone in today's day and age how quickly new technology was being used in the future; luckily James never had to think of such things as they would interrupt his playtime.

Will, his friend from next door tossed a ball with James for awhile until he soiled himself and had to be carried to the cleaning facility by his transport model. It seemed that this always happened to Will at this time of day. In truth, it had nearly always happened for the past twenty years. When the next relievance period came, James emptied himself and found Will again as he always did. He selected the play option on his transport and his screen lit up with the orange symbol. Will did the same and the two went back outside.
There they saw quite a sight; the newest shipment of transports were in the yard and the quick process of switching the old tech with the new was typical for the two friends. As the transports were carried off James had a passing thought of where they would go, however it soon faded to the want for more play. The new transports even threw the ball for them! Oh, it was so much fun playing ball when you didn't have to lift your arms!

As lunchtime came, James' transport carried him inside to pump meal into his stomach so he didn't choke if he tried to swallow actual food. Later he would be put to bed with a quick injection to prevent insomnia. The next day he would go out and play ball again for enjoyment. James is so lucky that he has all the technology of the future to make his life so easy!

It's too bad that he doesn't see the AI designing each new wave of technology to replace the old ones. It's a shame that earth is slowly running out of resources to support the constant production. It's a mistake that the AI lacks the free-will to stop. It's a horror what will happen to James when the transports stop coming.
