A story of a hero...the croatian Leonidas!

Day 1,142, 19:36 Published in Ireland Ireland by DustDemon

I want to know something more of the great Irish history and it's heroes, so im posting a story of a great croatian hero in hope to get a response...

In 1566, from August 5 to September 7, his small force (2,300 soldiers) heroically defended the little fortress of Szigetvár against the whole Ottoman host (102,000 soldiers), led by Suleiman the Magnificent in person. The Battle of Szigetvár ended with Zrinski perishing with every member of the garrison in a last desperate sortie. Suleiman had died shortly previous.

This is a picture of the last charge of the defenders lead bi Nikola Zrinski. Before the charge they sang a great song -U boj, u boj- what means -Into the fight, into the fight-

This is the song in english...

To battle, to battle!
Unsheathe your swords, brethren,
Let the enemy know how we die!
Our city already burns,
The heat is already reaching us:
Their roar resounds,
Their rage is rampant!
Our chests flare up as that fire,
The roar is silenced by the rattling of our swords!
All of you, kiss Zrinski
As brethren would kiss one another!
To Zrinski's gates,
Trustful heroes!
Now, brethren!
Load the rifles, pistols,
Our thunders, our bang,
Let them echo, tear down the sea!
Let us grind our fierce swords,
Make them cut harder, harder!

Good bye and be well,
Our home of old,
Oh, good bye,
From everywhere
The grim enemy comes
Already they plan
To bury your sacred body,
But they won't!
All your sons move to the fight for you!
Our home, you will stand forever!
Into the fight, to the fight!
For the home, for the home now to the fight!
Even if the infernal might
Raises its knife at it;
To the fight!
We are few, but courageous!
Who, who will bring him down?
Death to the devil, death!
To die for your homeland - such a delight!
Against the enemy! They must fall!
