A Contest on Reforming the FEC

Day 1164 of New World

Elitism: What Are You Going to Do About It?

Lots of talk's lately about elitism. Some sarcastic, some sincere. Some ornery and funny. Some grouchy and not very funny. Some of it just dull as dishwater.

"Elitism". "Seniors and Juniors". "The Inner Circle". "Blah-blah.. puts the country in grave danger." Bleh. Is this just the way things always are in eRepublik? Is there a way to do it better?

In Understanding eUS Class Structure, citizen Heero Blaze recently pointed out that Orwell's 1984 framework of "Inner Party, Outer Party and Proles" fits how things work. Pretty interesting analogy.

Perhaps it's also fair to say that whoever isn't in the Inner Party -- or as they like to say in Romania, "HQ" -- just naturally tends towards some kind of populist discontent?

Hmmm...

Muddy Waters

One thing's for sure. Something has definitely gotten stirred up lately.

There was SamWystan's quixotic but energetic campaign for PP of the Libertarians. That stirred up this hornet's nest to a fever pitch. Particularly his criticisms of the eUSA's anti-PTO squad, the FEC (Federal Elections Commission).

Typical street scene during the Liberatarian PP election.

And there's been follow-ons too, like:

The formation of The Fraternity party, with its campaign for an explicitly anti-elitist "Brotherhood".

Interesting articles lately on this general topic -- and not just in the eUSA.

More criticism of FEC on the part of newer citizens who felt iced out unfairly from the just-concluded Congress elections.

So here's the deal... we're Putting Our Money Where Your Mouth Is

Yup, the Socialist Freedom Party Commune is offering up a cash prize for good ideas.

Woot! That's right, we're shelling out genuine eRepublik gold.

Here at the SFP we like to work out organizational structures, institutions, programs and crap to test our theories in practice. (Of course we like to bitch and moan a lot too, but who doesn't, right?)

So -- in keeping with our "theory means f***-all without practice" principle, we're taking that attidue to the e-street...

We are running a contest to see who can come up with the best ideas for reforming or re-structuring the FEC in a way that will make e-America a better and healthier place.

If you think FEC is 100% fine the way it is, then this contest isn't for you. Although of course you're welcome to share your thoughts.

But if you think the FEC is elitist, or that the anti-PTO fever is overdone, or that it goes too far, or creates bad feelings unnecessarily... then we want to hear from you.

But we don't want to hear your complaints.

We want to hear your ideas.

So get caffeinated and start thinking:

* How would you reform the anti-PTO efforts?

* What policies would you implement so that true threats to national security are addressed -- without squishing dissent, throwing cold water on new ideas, or treating immigrants badly?

* What are the right principles to apply in order to get it right?

* Is there some kind of language that's more appropriate or would be more effective to use than "anti-takeover", "ATO", "PTO" and so on?

As somebody somewhere once said, quoting somebody else, "What is to be done?"

The contest will run until end of eRep day on Sunday, January 30th.

Next week, our panel of judges will announce the winners.

First prize: 8 gold
Second prize: 4 gold
Third prize: 2 gold
Honorable mentions: 1 gold

All ideas are welcome. We don't care if you're in the Inner Party, the Outer Party, the Outer-Space Party, or if you're a Prole or a Pole. As long as you have something constructive to say, give it a shot! You do not have to be a citizen of the eUSA to participate either. Basically, the only rule is PigInZen's maxim: "Don't be a dick."
