[Swiss - MoE] Chess World Cup

Dear friends from all over the World,

Firstly, my sincere apologizes for the delay.
Switzerland is going to organize Chess World Cup!
The matches will start from April 15th, which means you have roughly 5 days to take full grasp of your strategies!

Countries that will compete, in alphabetical order are: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Estonia, Greece, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and USA.

I made this chessboard out of the flags:

I know its not pretty, but i only know paint 😃

Rules & Information for the tournaments.

1. Date of the beginning of the Chess World Cup: 15/04/2016
2. Host: Switzerland
3. The matches will be played on: http://en.lichess.org/
- The players will need to have account. ( So we can track the matches )
If you do not have one yet, please make asap or you will be disqualified.
4. System of the tournament: Prolonged Knockout
5. Matches will be played 15 minutes per side, increment 5 seconds per move.
- 2 matches, one with black figures, one with white.
6. In each match player will earn points, 1 point to the winner, 0 to the loser and 0.5 to both player if it is a draw.
7. Players that score 0 points in a match get 1 KO, when a player receives 3 KOs he is finished.
8. Prizes are 14.000 cc for first place, 8.400 cc for second place and 5.600 cc for third place.

Let me suggest you. Make pairs of players. We decide when its comfortable for both to get online. We play and then report the results to the organizing committee.

I think this way its better. Up to you though

Point 7 in the rules is unclear. Is a "match" equal to 1 game or 2 games?

Extended KO system with 18 people seems hard to organize and keep track of, I think Swiss system would have been easier for 18 players.

So if a match ends 1.5 - 0.5 (one win, one draw) does the losing player get a KO point? And what happens if the match ends 1-1?

If there were really 18 players (which frankly I doubt, as there will be some no-shows), I would do it the following: pick the 4 smallest eCountries from the 18 and make these 4 players play one preliminary round. The 2 winners advance to the 1/8 finals and then we continue with straight elimination system. If a match ends 1-1, a third blitz game is played (5 mins, no increment) and in case of a draw in this final game the player with black advances. Just a suggestion🙂

Another option is if you make 3 groups of 6 players and players in each group play against each other (5 rounds), then the 3 winners of the groups play against each other (that's 2 more rounds) therefore determining who gets Nr.1, 2 and 3.
