This is the first article in a series of articles that I committed to producing LAST term as PP of MOO. The renaissance of MOO is not a second coming of the old MOO, it is a reclamation project of a great party that got derailed and involves a renovation so that it is relevant once again to the eCan political community.
The focus of today's article is Opportunity #1: Don't be a dick.

Opportunity #1: Don't be a dick...
Over the past year, I have started playing a lot of Minecraft. Almost every multi-server I've played on, there are a group of jerks who grief and troll beyond belief and anything that I can tolerate. These guys are dicks and they ruin the enjoyment of the game for others. Even players within their group ask them to stop. It's pretty bad when a dick thinks you are a dick. Now, I only play on private servers with people I know or single player.
eRep is no different. Everybody knows a citizen in game who has been deceived by another. The story of the guy who agreed to sell 100 Q7 tanks on the black market, donated the tanks, but never received payment. The story of the guy who shared the password of an org with another player only to find the org wiped of currency and gold the next day. The story of the guy earned PP and then changed the party name to something derogatory or defaming. The story of the guy who earned CP and then turn-coated, robbing the treasury and compromising foreign relations.
These things really suck and they damage player retention.
I recall when the CPF was wiped. We lost three weapon companies, a ticket company, an oil company, and diamond companies, plus all of our CAD and gold, and our forum, just because someone wanted to be a dick. This event, and a series of dick actions after this, led to a marked decline in party membership for CPF.
I imagine that citizens have reasons for being a dick. Deriving attention or pleasure from such negative actions speaks to some behavioural issues on the RL front, perhaps a lack of self-esteem, a lack of self-confidence, perhaps being stuck in an abusive relationship or simply a negative situation at school, work or the home front.
Don't be a dick. If you have to displace your feelings from RL and do something in-game, pause for moment. Perhaps you can turn it around and build something good in-game or find a solution to your RL problem in-game. I am amazed at how many RL resources appear in-game. There are a surprising amount of talented people in RL that play this game and are able to provide FREE advice that is relevant and reliable to your situation. I know that I have benefited from that approach.
On how MOO will promote this platform...
MOO intends to call people out when they are being a dick. Members who are a dick will be moved down in priority on the congress ballot. Articles that confirm you are a dick will contain comments drawing attention to it.
It may seem arrogant to be the party that is the curator of who is a dick or not, but I don't want to play this game with dicks anymore.
Just because a citizen criticizes something or is vocal against something does not mean they are a dick. I can think of three players right now in that category; Funky, Muglack and crisfire. These guys are not dicks. They may be guilty of dicklike acts in their past, but they aren't dicks. These guys are critical and vocal and they possess integrity. They can standfast and oppose someone without being dicks.
crazymofo13 is a dick.
In the future, we will talk about "forgive and forget" and at the risk of a spoiler, I'll say right now that you can go from "dick" to "koshur", but that will be up to the dick's ability to repent.

Being a troll: Cleverly turning someone's words/works around on them for a laugh enjoyed by both parties, or to point out the blind faith and closed mindedness of individuals that are too set in a certain path to even attempt to accept input from others.
Being a dick: "Look! I wrecked something you worked very hard to obtain! Ha ha!" Most often associated with laughing alone.
If no one's laughing with you, you're probably a dick. If people are laughing at you, you're probably a dick. If you don't know the difference, you're probably a retarded dick.
And yes, that's a cut and paste I've used far too many times in social feeds, forums and IRC channels.

When you write a wall of text when I am pissed your being a dick.
Upon closer examination of your article I had a thought. In my experience, calling someone out for negativity rarely solves the problem. The person in question allready knows this, and everyone you're trying to alert of it also allready knows, more often than not.
Instead, I would recommend to approach this from the exact opposite. Call out people for being positive and they move to the top of the congress list. Promoting positivity is far more powerful than denouncing negativity.
Agreed on that part. 'dicklisting' someone without calling attention to it (just sticking them on the bottom of the Congress list) would avoid that issue. Modeling a better way to play the game yourself and giving kudos to those that do so on a regular basis is likely the better option.
There's still a time when you need to explain to people that their ideas are mistaken or that their behaviour is damaging to the team. Saying that without sounding like a dick is probably not that easy to pull off in an online environment.
I don't think there's a straightforward method to cultivating the best gaming environment because people come in many different shapes, attitudes, and motivations. Even the nice guys can come across as assholes in specific situations. I'd say all players have something good to offer when they feel it is worth the effort. It just tends to be easier to react to the negativity that heats up our tempers.
I like your suggestion, builds positive energy, hopefully enough to snuff out the negative energy.
Hopefully is a word we all use far to often in our endeavors. But if we can't hope or try then we have allready lost to the dicks. Thanks for reading and replying to my comment!
