In Praise of the eUK Tutorial, plus the National Lottery!

My friends,

In recent NPF articles we have discussed briefly the UK Tutorial that was recently produced and completed by Spite313; at the time in his capacity as a private citizen.

I’d like to begin this article by paying tribute to the incredible success that this endeavour has been. The new tutorial is simply excellent; perfectly tailored to the modern game and the experiences of new players today. I have spoken to several new players via the new player Friday scheme, and when I’m unavailable to answer questions directly I’ve always pointed players towards the tutorial. This has proven to be a winning strategy, putting players on the front foot from the start; helping them not to waste finite resources early on, and generally giving them the best possible start to the game.

In each NPF article I’ve been posting screenshots from the tutorial. These are not aimed at new players, but rather at showing established and experienced players just what a high quality tool we have at our disposal. Inevitably new players will go to different people for advice when they first begin; some to the CP, others to their MU or party leader. The more of those people that know about and appreciate the tutorial, the more effective that it can be.

If you are a MU commander or a party president, I really encourage you to get to know the tutorial a little; see for yourself that it is a highly effective tool for new players. I’d also like to point out that it is strictly non-partisan; it genuinely offers no opinion on what MU is better than another, or what party a player should join. It steers clear of controversy and simply walks new players through the meat and bones of their introduction to erepublik.

To my mind, that means that we can all safely use and recommend it to our new players, safe in the knowledge that nobody could use the tutorial to poach or indoctrinate new players into their particular tribe. To me, this is essential. After so long in the game many people have grudges against one another; a new players first steps should be totally free of such things.

At this point in the article I’d like to point out that Spite doesn’t know what I am writing here. He hasn’t asked me to sing his praises. But we have known each other now for over eight years and would consider ourselves to be old friends as well as old comrades. Spite is very good at the politics of erepublik and has done just about every job, including right at the top level. But most of the time that has been in a partisan capacity; as in, for his chosen side to win at the expense of others. But not this time.

I think he deserves recognition for this for two reasons: The quality of the tutorial and the fact that it was completely selflessly done. Spite has spent literally hours producing a tool that really helps new players, for no personal gain and for no gain for his ‘side’ either. In fact players from all sides, and potentially all countries, benefit. He hasn’t asked to be rewarded for these efforts, but I think that a reward would be well deserved.

And so, I hereby submit to the Plato Foundation my request: That Spite’s great work on the UK Tutorial be recognised, and his hard work and selfless contribution be suitably rewarded. This tutorial will help new players get started and make them much more likely to stick around for the long haul.
