Today we talk about USA's 1st Gold of the 2018 Olympics.
The medal was earn by Redmond "Red" Gerard. A native of Rocky River, Ohio a western suburb of Cleveland in North East Ohio. North East Ohio region is where I was born, raised and still live, so it was quite a joy to see him coming down the slopes and seeing his face on television when he received his score and realized he just won the gold medal. His 1080 degree plus spins helped him receive a score of 87.16 knocking Canadian Heavyweights Mark McMorris and Max Parrot out of contention for the gold medal.

This amazing kid is a true testament to perseverance. His first two runs we not that great but his 3rd and final run down the mountain was one of amazement. Red is only 17 years old and is now the youngest person in the world to earn the gold in the snowboarding event. Red has one more event (BigAir) later this week, and is really pumped up for it.

In an interview he was quoted as saying that much of his training came from a hand built course his brothers helped him build in their backyard. He now trains in Silverthorne, Colorado and was amazed to find out during an interview on Sunday that so many of his family and friends from back in Rocky River had come out to a local bar to watch him and cheer him on. He also said in the interview that when we returns home he is committed to graduating high school.

Many of the competitors were Congratulating, man hugging, hi-five'n and patting each other on their backs at the bottom of the hill displaying true sportsmanship.
