[EDEN] What an alliance is and what it means

Day 857, 16:06 Published in Croatia Finland by avec

EDEN was formed soon after the collapse of ATLANTIS. For the first few months, it didn't have a treaty, and it was mostly just countries banding together, with a sole aim to defend USA and Canada against PEACE invasion. There were no other conflicting interests countries had, and it was clear to everyone what the grand plan is. Then, after Russia and Hungary were driven off North America and Norway was successfully deleted, everything changed. All countries were back on the map with no threat of a major PEACE invasion. Suddenly everyone had their own plans, and then began the offensive efforts in Germany, France and Asia. What I want to address is the mentality behind this, and how it affects EDEN.

An alliance is an agreement between two or more parties, made in order to advance common goals and to secure common interests. Notice the ”to advance common goals” part. Most countries don't have common goals when on offensive - for example, military campaigns that are planned by Poland tend to aim at giving Poland new regions, or securing Polish interests, which are not the same Greece or Australia might have. The same goes for each country: they all have their own campaigns and wishes, for which they want support. The campaigns often contradict each other, or require prioritizing so that all of them cannot be executed simultaneously with full alliance weight on them at the same time. All of the campaigns cannot be supported alone, and EDEN cannot be expected to build an empire for one member with the expense of others. How to satisfy all countries in the alliance now that there is no more common defensive interest? This is the dilemma we have.

Countries as chess pieces? Or rather equal members in a brotherhood - you decide.

There seems to be a general consensus amongst population and even top-level politicians, that defending a country is easier than attacking one. It is true, to an extent. A military campaign which requires several countries is prone to failure, as seen several times during past, whereas defence happens almost automatically with MPPs kicking in and therefore all damage redirecting where needed more easily. I'd however dare to argue, that because of the same reason a defensive action doesn't need a working alliance, only cooperation. It's the offensive action where alliance is needed, that is where countries have to actually commit to plans and put their trust on centralized leadership. It is also what countries should keep in mind - offensive actions require cooperation, diligence and commitment from all sides. I stand by my opinion that blaming allies and moaning at them for not contributing enough achieves nothing. What do you expect to achieve by complaining? Complaining like lately seen in the media has never achieved anything but hurt relations and discouraged any further cooperation.

I'll leave you with this topic, and let you all ponder it over night. I thought about first announcing a few updates that happened in EDEN, but I'll write them in the official EDEN newspaper if needed, and keep my own newspaper for my own ponderings.

By the way, please congratulate Gaius Julius and Crista22 for their eMarriage 🙂
