(Ambassador) Cyrillic Script
Vladi U
Hello fellows 😉
,
Because of your great interest showed under one of my recent articles:
I decided to write a short one in your press about the Cyrillic script. I hope it will be interesting and enjoyable way to learn something you have not heard before.
Firstly, was created the Glagolitic script by the Saints Cyril and Methodius. They were brothers who were sent by the Byzantine emperor in 863 to spread Christianity among the West Slavs (nowadays Poles, Slovaks and Czechs). Cyril and Methodius wanted to use this new script so that easily to explain the Christian religion to the pagans.
But the Pope forbade the worship in Slavic language and the Frankish ruler wanted to protect his lands from foreign influence so Cyril and Methodius were expelled. The only place where they could go was Bulgaria (then First Bulgarian Empire).
In Bulgaria, the Glagolitic script became widespread. It was used by the Bulgarian writers at that time and there were found many documents written in it, especially in our culture centers. So, we were the first nation to adopt this new script.

The Glagolitic alphabet
So, if there was Glagolitic script how appeared the Cyrillic one?
Here is the answer:
As you can see the letters in Glagolitic script are really complicated. Saint Clement of Ohrid, one of Cyril and Methodius’ disciples, understood that and wanted to write much simpler alphabet. He created the Cyrillic script in Preslav (previous Bulgarian capital and culture center) and named it after his teacher – Cyril.
Here you can compare both of them Glagolitic (above) and Cyrillic (bellow)

This historic fact makes us very proud because nowadays the Cyrillic is used by over 300 million of people around the world. Just look at the scale – country as little as Bulgaria gave script to so many other nations.
Countries where the Cyrillic is official script
With the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union on 1 January 2007, Cyrillic became the third official script of the European Union, following the Latin script and Greek script.
Thank you for your attention! = Благодаря за вниманието!

Thank you for a great potted history. I presume there's some link between Glagotic and the Armenian and Georgian scripts, cos they look pretty similar. Always found it strange how some South Slavic countries (Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, some Montenegrins) use the Cyrillic or variants thereof, while others use Latin script (Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia). There's a similar split between the West Slavs and East Slavs. Sadly my history of all that jazz only goes back to the Balkan Wars of the early 20th century so I know next to nothing about the development and possible rift between the various Slavic cultures. But yeah, time to turn on the Cyrillic keyboard...
Благодаря! 🙂
(Wow, that's nothing like "dziekuje", "dekuji" or "dakujem"!)
I blame the Catholic Church, they divided us...
Yeah, religion tends to do that... makes sense though, now I come to think of it. Orthodox use Cyrillic, Catholic use Latin.
+ Asian countries influenced by Russia.
I don't like the fact that for example in Serbia, we use both scripts, for example in elementary school one month we wrote in cyrillic and the next month in latin. OK, I guess it is good to know both, but still... But it also depends in which part of the country you are, I am all the way north, influenced by Hungary, we mostly use latin and in the south Cyrillic is predominant.
Voted. Interesting article, good job o7

Good article 🙂
btw, I recently read, that the name "Cyricilic" for this alphabet was given in the russian sources in 18-19th century. All the time before that, this was just the "bulgarian alphabet".
Well, this is not all true because Cyrillic alphabet is also only alphabet in use in Serbia from 11th century.
Of course, you could and you should be proud of Cyrillic 🙂 but, as it is written here, Cyrillic alphabet is created by Byzantines as variant of their Greek alphabet for use in other orthodox countries. So this is not originally Bulgarian or Serbian or Russian alphabet. Cyrillic is Greek and belong to all nations which use it. 🙂
Please read the article and comment again 🙂
The alphabet that was initially used in Bulgaria, created by Cyril and Methodii is not used.
The one that is called "Cyrillic" was created in the bulgarian capital by the order of the bulgarian king by a pure bulgarian 😃
If this is not pure bulgarian...than I am from Mars and you are from Venera 😉
Најлепше писмо!
Does anyone still use the Glagolitic alphabet?
No
No one uses it after the Cyrillic one was created.
Very nice, did not know about the Glagolitic alphabet, voted!

Excellent! I knew about Saints Cyril and Methodius creating the alphabet (it comes up often in trivia quizzes!) but not that they actually invented an earlier version.
This is the sort of thing that gives me hope for the game! Always like to learn something new!!
Great, nice to know some history ( I was useless at it in school - crap history teacher).
Родна реч омайна,сладка...........🙂
Interesting read and I've learnt something which is always good
