The German Question

Day 442, 06:18 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Spite313

Before I move onto the question at hand, I would like to ask that anyone who comments consider the following:

1. It is the right of every congressman to represent their views. If you disagree with them, do so in an intelligent way, not by slinging insults.

2. No-one worth their salt says they're going to ignore congress or move abroad if they lose the argument. That is petty, cheap and childish.

3. The military should always remain publically neutral on matters of politics. Otherwise we are just another rogue state. If you're a CO complain in private, but it is your job to follow orders, not make them. If you want to do that quit and become a politician.

The German Question

Over the last week or so, a number of developments have occurred in European politics which have resulted in the rise of what has become known as the German Question. Firstly, a group of individuals have tentatively started to broach the subject of a European Social Alliance. This alliance would include both ex-ATLANTIS and ex-PEACE countries. At the same time, Germany requested an MPP with Britain.

Recent German History

Germany was conquered by Sweden long ago for attacking Poland in an act of blatant imperialism. Sweden agreed recently to gradually free German regions, keeping only one region for resource purposes. However, Germany acted to start resistance wars in their regions, liberating them by force of arms. They have since signed MPPs with many PEACE countries in an attempt to deter Sweden from reconquering the much weaker country.

Arguments for an MPP with Germany

Those who support an MPP with Germany argue that the newly free country is entitled to maintain it's own sovereignty. They argue that an MPP with Germany will create a situation where no nation in central Europe can attack another- in other words a lasting peace. The obvious goal of Germany is to re-establish its position as a member of the global community, and it sees an alliance with both PEACE and ATLANTIS members as the best way of ensuring it's neutrality and safety. British patriots, upset at recent ATLANTIS foul play and imperialism, have sworn to defend the sovereignty of weak nations from strong nations, regardless of alliances. To go one step further, many of the members involved have declared that they will not support a military alliance, only a defensive one. This has led to growing support for a potential European Social Alliance (ESA).

Arguments against an MPP with Germany

Many strong players who were involved in the founding of ATLANTIS have voiced opposition to the move. Their arguments are also valid ones. They claim that by signing an MPP with Germany the UK is betraying Sweden, it's oldest ally. They have thrown words such as 'traitor' at their opponents. They have also stressed that it is unecessary to MPP with Germany as Sweden could not invade Germany without facing the combined military forces of Indonesia, Iran and so on. These things are all true. Their arguments have managed to sway many players, especially as the Swedish President, Toothpaste, has personally spoken to the British through his newspaper article.

Summation of the arguments

Simply put, there is no 'right' answer to this question. It is undoubtable that Sweden and their newly freed allies Poland are eager to invade Germany. However, there is also little chance that this will occur whilst the MPPs with PEACE are in place. So the issue becomes first and foremost one of principle. The camps are divided evenly: Firstly, those who believe in fighting imperialism at all costs; Secondly those who believe in standing by our allies at all costs.
